Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Reversibility of liver fibrosis

open access: yesAnnals of Hepatology, 2009
Liver cirrhosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and has very limited therapeutic options. Regardless of the aetiology, hepatic fibrosis is a characteristic feature of chronic liver disease. Our knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of this scarring has grown exponentially in the past 25 years. It has now clear that this is a highly

Fibrosis activity vs. disease stage: Complementary and independent predictors of outcomes in alcohol-related liver disease

open access: yesJHEP Reports
Background & Aims: Excessive alcohol consumption accelerates fibrosis progression in steatotic liver disease. Disease activity can be described by fibrogenic activity, of which collagen formation is a central process. Type III collagen formation (PRO-

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Cytokines and STATs in Liver Fibrosis [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2012
Liver fibrosis, or cirrhosis, is a common end-stage condition of many chronic liver diseases after incomplete recovery from hepatocyte damage. During fibrosis progression, hepatocellular damage and inflammation trigger complex cellular events that result in collagen deposition and the disruption of the normal liver architecture.

Infections increase the risk of decompensation and death in patients with early alcohol-related liver disease

open access: yesJHEP Reports
Background & Aims: Infections are frequent in patients with cirrhosis and worsen prognosis. We evaluated the incidence of infections and their impact on decompensation and death in patients with early alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) during long ...

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Synthesis and preclinical evaluation of a 89Zr-labelled human single chain antibody for non-invasive detection of hepatic myofibroblasts in acute liver injury

open access: yesScientific Reports
Synaptophysin is expressed on fibrogenic hepatic myofibroblasts. C1–3 is a single chain human antibody (scAb) that binds specifically to synaptophysin on hepatic myofibroblasts, providing a targeting vector for novel in vivo imaging agents of chronic ...

Non-invasive tests for MetALD and alcohol-related liver diseaseKeypoints

open access: yesJHEP Reports
Summary: Metabolic- and alcohol-related liver disease (MetALD) and alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) are major drivers of the global burden of cirrhosis. While metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects nearly one-third of

Predictive Ability of Laboratory Indices for Liver Fibrosis in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C after the Eradication of Hepatitis C Virus. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Liver fibrosis remains an important risk factor for hepatocarcinogenesis in patients with chronic hepatitis C even after the eradication of hepatitis C virus (HCV).
