Locally adaptable mathematical morphology

IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005, 2005
We investigate how common binary mathematical morphology operators can be adapted so that the size of the structuring element (SE) can vary across the image. We show that when the SE are balls of a metric, locally adaptable erosion and dilation can be efficiently implemented as a variant of distance transformation algorithms.

Local Adaptation in Marine Invertebrates

Annual Review of Marine Science, 2011
Local adaptation in the sea was regarded historically as a rare phenomenon that was limited to a handful of species with exceptionally low dispersal potential. However, a growing body of experimental studies indicates that adaptive differentiation occurs in numerous marine invertebrates in response to selection imposed by strong gradients (and more ...

Adaptive Mixtures of Local Experts

Neural Computation, 1991
We present a new supervised learning procedure for systems composed of many separate networks, each of which learns to handle a subset of the complete set of training cases. The new procedure can be viewed either as a modular version of a multilayer supervised network, or as an associative version of competitive learning.

Localization and adaptation of quality approaches

IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. Proceedings., 2004
Many different approaches on quality management, quality assurance, and quality assessment have been developed in recent years. These approaches are based on varied interpretations of quality on the one hand and different aspects of education on the other hand.

Local adaptive nonlinear diffusion

2008 15th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, 2008
A non-linear diffusion filtering method of an image with local adjustment of the diffusivity function K factor, is presented. Local image features produced by textures and other local geometric characteristics are detected, where a defined edges proximity in the gradient direction occur.

Adaptive Detection of Local Scanners

2006
Network attacks often employ scanning to locate vulnerable hosts and services. Fast and accurate detection of local scanners is key to containing an epidemic in its early stage. Existing scan detection schemes use statically determined detection criteria, and as a result do not respond well to traffic perturbations.
