Long-haul 100Gb/s coherent transmission experiments
SPIE Proceedings, 2008In this paper, we highlight the potential of Coherent PDM-QPSK format for next-generation 100Gb/s transmission systems, through a record transmission experiment of 16.4Tb/s over 2550km, and in-depth experimental analyses of tolerance to joint PMD and non-linear effects, as well as robustness to typical constraints of terrestrial optical networks.

Long-Haul Transmission Performance in the Internet
2010 8th Annual Communication Networks and Services Research Conference, 2010Long-haul traffic accounts for a large percentage of the total data carried on the Internet. Due to the rapid changes of the Internet in terms of access technologies and core network bandwidth, the performance of long-haul transmission in the current Internet environment has not been well understood.

High capacity long-haul transmission experiments
11th International Conference on Integrated Optics and Optical Fibre Communications. 23rd European Conference on Optical Communications IOOC-ECOC97, 1997High capacity long haul transmission experiments based on Erbium-Doped fiber amplifiers fall into three categories; laboratory measurements using circulating loops, laboratory measurements using long testbeds, and field measurements on installed systems. This paper reviews these three types of experiments.

Experiments on Long-Haul High-Capacity Transmission Systems
2011Progress in optical communications has been one of the key factors for the enormous growth of the JCT sector, and, in particular, of the Internet phenomenon. Such a progress has been driven by experimental successes that have been obtained in the last three decades in several laboratories all over the world, and we have witnessed a fantastic challenge ...

New fibers for long-haul transmission
LEOS '95. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1995 Annual Meeting. 8th Annual Meeting. Conference Proceedings, 2002Summary form only given. Presents single-channel optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) of high-speed fiber systems. Recently dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) have been used to compensate the dispersion of conventional step-index fibers which make up most of the embedded fiber base in North America.

WDM in long-haul transmission systems
Technical Digest. Summaries of papers presented at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics. Postconference Edition. CLEO '99. Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (IEEE Cat. No.99CH37013), 1999Summary form only given, as follows. The transmission capacity of long-haul light-wave systems is experiencing the second "order-of-magnitude" increase within the past 6 years. The introduction of single channel EDFA based systems gave the first large capacity increase, and WDM is giving the next. The tutorial reviews the important issues regarding the

Wavelength division multiplexing in long-haul transmission systems
Conference Proceedings. LEOS '97. 10th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1997 Annual Meeting, 2002The erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) has had a profound impact on the design, operation and performance of transoceanic cable transmission, and is central to the expected proliferation of cable systems. Important strides have been made in areas of dispersion management, gain equalization, modulation formats and polarization scrambling which have ...

Multi-Span Long-Haul Transmission
2009This chapter outlines some current activities performed in the author’s research group and aimed at identifying the performance and the distances attainable in optical multi-span long-haul transmission systems with high-order modulation. Firstly, some system experiments are presented which investigate achievable distances with 8PSK and Star 16QAM when ...

Single-Mode Fiber Design for Long Haul Transmission
IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 1982By using simple yet accurate approximations for the propagation characteristics of a single-mode optical fiber, we obtain a simple model for the total loss and chromatic dispersion of single-mode fiber transmission lines as a function of the operating conditions such as splice offset, microbending loss, bends, etc. This model is then applied to typical

Coherent detection for long haul transmission systems
LEOS 2007 - IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings, 2007The tolerance to PMD is measured with and without polarization multiplexing at 10 Gbauds based on QPSK format. Then joint mitigation of PMD, residual dispersion and narrow filtering is demonstrated in a WDM transmission over 4080 km.
