Risk to human health related to the presence of perfluoroalkyl substances in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 18, Issue 9, September 2020., 2020
Abstract The European Commission asked EFSA for a scientific evaluation on the risks to human health related to the presence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in food. Based on several similar effects in animals, toxicokinetics and observed concentrations in human blood, the CONTAM Panel decided to perform the assessment for the sum of four PFASs ...

Using asexual vertebrates to study genome evolution and animal physiology: Banded (Fundulus diaphanus) x Common Killifish (F. heteroclitus) hybrid lineages as a model system

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 13, Issue 6, Page 1214-1239, July 2020., 2020
Abstract Wild, asexual, vertebrate hybrids have many characteristics that make them good model systems for studying how genomes evolve and epigenetic modifications influence animal physiology. In particular, the formation of asexual hybrid lineages is a form of reproductive incompatibility, but we know little about the genetic and genomic mechanisms by

Mesopelagic Fish Traits: Functions and Trade‐Offs

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 26, Issue 1, Page 83-103, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Fishes inhabiting the mesopelagic zone of the world's oceans are estimated to account for the majority of the world's fish biomass. They have recently attracted new attention because they are part of the biological carbon pump and have been reconsidered as a contribution to food security.

Halal and Makruk: Muslim archaeological fish assemblages as cultural identifiers in the Iberian Middle Ages?

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Volume 34, Issue 4, July/August 2024.
Abstract Muslim religion has strict rules to determine what kinds of foodstuffs, and under what circumstances, are deemed appropriate for consumption. Fishes are not an exception to this rule and features such as body shape or the presence and conspicuousness of scales dictate whether certain species are acceptable or rejected.
