A pharmacokinetic interaction between cimetidine or ranitidine and lornoxicam [PDF]

Summary Cimetidine 400 mg twice daily significantly increased serum concentrations and reduced apparent oral clearance of lornoxicam 8 mg twice daily in 12 healthy volunteers. Ranitidine 150 mg twice daily produced no significant changes in lornoxicam pharmacokinetics.

Background: The indiscriminate use of drugs is routinely observed in the field of veterinary medicine. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the class of drugs that most commonly cause intoxication in pet animals. Lornoxicam, an NSAID, is a cyclooxygenase COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitor and is only recommended for human treatment.

The authors investigated, in a randomized, placebocontrolled, double-blinded study, the efficacy and safety of lornoxicam on pain after abdominal hysterectomy and on tramadol consumption in patients. Fifty patients were randomized to receive either oral placebo or lornoxicam 8 mg one hour before surgery.
