Cartilage stem/progenitor cells are activated in osteoarthritis via interleukin-1β/nerve growth factor signaling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Introduction: Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are key regulators in the pathogenesis of inflammatory arthritis; specifically, IL-1β is involved in tissue degeneration and NGF is involved in joint pain.

Novel 3D‐Printed Biophotonic Scaffold Displaying Luminescence under Near‐Infrared Light for Photopharmacological Activation and Biological Signaling Compound Release

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Despite significant efforts in developing novel biomaterials to regenerate tissue, only a few of them have successfully reached clinical use. It has become clear that the next generation of biomaterials must be multifunctional. Smart biomaterials can respond to environmental or external stimuli, interact in a spatial‐temporal manner, and trigger ...

Few‐Layered Conductive Graphene Foams for Electrical Transdifferentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Into Schwann Cell‐Like Phenotypes

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Few‐layered three dimansional conductive graphene foams are promising cytocompatible platforms to transdifferentiate mesenchymal stem cells into Schwann cell‐like phenotypes using electrical and microstructural cues. Applied electrical stimulation conditions resulted in activation of MAPK, neurotrphin and RAS signaling pathways that led to upregulation

Harnessing autophagy to overcome mitogen‐activated protein kinase kinase inhibitor‐induced resistance in metastatic melanoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background Patients with malignant melanoma often relapse after treatment with BRAF and/or mitogen‐activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitors (MEKi) owing to development of drug resistance.

Transformative Bioactive Wear Resistant Ti3Au:N and Ti3Au:O Coatings for Medical Implants and Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Coatings of titanium‐gold are grown in nitrogen and oxygen environments via magnetron sputtering to simultaneously enhance their biotribological and antibacterial properties. The coatings are highly crystalline with superhard scratch‐resistant surfaces and wear rates 20 times lower than the bare Ti‐6Al‐4V substrate.

From Neural Crest Development to Cancer and Vice Versa: How p75NTR and (Pro)neurotrophins Could Act on Cell Migration and Invasion?

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2018
The p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR), also known as low-affinity nerve growth factor, belongs to the tumor necrosis factor family of receptors. p75NTR is widely expressed in the nervous system during the development, as well as, in the neural crest ...

Acromegaly: pathogenesis & treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Acromegaly is a multi-system disorder whose etiology is most often traced back to a growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenoma (PA). Growth hormone (GH) secretion promotes insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) release from peripheral tissues, leading to ...

Biochemical and Genetic Studies of UBR3, a Ubiquitin Ligase with a Function in Olfactory and Other Sensory Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Our previous work identified E3 ubiquitin ligases, termed UBR1-UBR7, that contain the ~70-residue UBR box, a motif important for the targeting of N-end rule substrates.

Strategies to Improve the Lipophilicity of Hydrophilic Macromolecular Drugs

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Hydrophilic macromolecular drugs can be successfully lipidized by covalent attachment of lipids, by hydrophobic ion pairing with negatively or positively charged surfactants, and by dry or wet reverse micelle formation. Lipophilicity enhancement of hydrophilic macromolecules has several benefits including stability and bioavailability improvement ...

Expression profiles of TRPV1, TRPV4, TLR4 and ERK1/2 in the dorsal root ganglionic neurons of a cancer-induced neuropathy rat model

open access: yes, 2018
Background: The spread of tumors through neural routes is common in several types of cancer in which patients suffer from a moderate-to-severe neuropathy, neural damage and a distorted quality of life.
