Low Velocity Impact of Marine Composites: Experiments and Theory

2020
This chapter seeks to provide an overview on the dynamic behavior of Navy-relevant composite materials to low velocity impact, at room and extreme temperatures. The study focuses on carbon fiber laminates toward establishing a compelling body of empirical results, which could support numerical and semi-empirical models for the prediction of dynamic ...

Low Velocity Impact of a Viscoelastic Beam

Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1982
A theoretical solution for the response of a viscoelastic beam to off-center low speed transverse impact is presented. The flexural model adopted for investigation consists of a uniform Bernoulli-Euler beam whose behavior has been generalized to include a linear viscoelastic constitutive relation for each element of the beam.

Filling the gap between hypervelocity and low velocity impacts

International Journal of Impact Engineering, 2019
Abstract During more than one decade of studying initiation phenomenology numerous papers at the previous HVIS and other symposia ([1] - [12]) were published. Most of them dealt with the hypervelocity impact initiation of plastic bonded high explosive charges by shaped charge jets (SCJ) and a few ones reported results in the ordnance ...

Control of Low-Velocity Impact Response in Composite Plates

Journal of Vibration and Control, 2000
An active control strategy for controlling impact response in composite plates is proposed. A linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller is designed based on a reduced-order model that captures the essential dynamics of the system. Simulations results show that the proposed controller reduces the energy transferred to the structure.

Composite materials response under low-velocity impact

Composite Structures, 1984
Abstract A simple model, based on energy considerations, has been tested to predict the maximum contact force during a low-velocity impact between an impactor and a composite plate. Three different composites, i.e. glass cloth-polyester, carbon cloth-polyester and nylon cloth-polyester, were examined.

An Electromyographic Study of Low-Velocity Rear-End Impacts

Spine, 2002
Experimental analysis was performed to determine the effects of low-velocity rear-end impacts on phasic and magnitudinal activity of the cervical muscles in expected and unexpected conditions. To determine the phasic response of the cervical muscles to increasing low-velocity rear-end impacts, and to compare the quantitative effects of awareness and ...

Instrumented low-velocity impact of CFRP beams

International Journal of Impact Engineering, 1995
Abstract Low velocity impact of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (AS4/3502 by Hercules) was conducted with 48 and 40 layered beams of different combinations of 0°, 90°, 45° and −45° stacking sequences. The test set-up included an instrumented drop weight and data acquisition system.

Low Velocity Impact, Vehicular Damage and Passenger Injury

CRANIO®, 1998
Low velocity motor vehicle accidents are a source of injury to many people every year, but the existence of these injuries is often challenged in the courts. The question raised is: "If the vehicle did not suffer any damage, how could the occupant become injured?" This paper reviews the pertinent literature and explains the mechanism of injury.

SIMULATIONS OF RESPONSE TO LOW VELOCITY IMPACT BY SPREADSHEET

International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, 2010
A program which can be used to simulate the elastic response of lumped mass single-degree-of-freedom systems to impact actions is introduced in this paper. The underlying governing equations and the implementation of their solutions on a spreadsheet are described.

Low velocity impact properties of flax composites

Composite Structures, 2017
Abstract The investigation of the impact performance of flax-based composites is the key in order to understand which material parameters determine the safety and longevity of flax composite products. In this study, the effect of fibre architectures and matrix type on the absorbed energy after perforation, on the damage resistance as well as on the ...
