Half-quantum vortices and walls bounded by strings in the polar-distorted phases of topological superfluid 3He

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Symmetry-allowed topological defects, like quantized vortices, often control the universal behavior of macroscopic quantum systems. Here, Mäkinen et al.

Electron–phonon coupling in copper intercalated Bi $$_{2}$$ 2 Se $$_{3}$$ 3

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
We report charge and heat transport studies in copper-intercalated topological insulator Bi $$_2$$ 2 Se $$_3$$ 3 hybrid devices. Measured conductivity shows impact of quantum corrections, electron–electron and electron–phonon interactions. Our shot noise

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Topologically-imposed vacancies and mobile solid 3He on carbon nanotube

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Probing fundamental quantum systems and their phase change is interesting. Here the authors demonstrate the existence of mobile quantum solid phase composed of dimerized 3He atoms and topology-induced vacancies using 3He adsorbed on carbon nanotube.

The low-temperature heat capacity of fullerite C60

open access: yes, 2015
The heat capacity at constant pressure of fullerite C60 has been investigated using an adiabatic calorimeter in a temperature range from 1.2 to 120 K. Our results and literature data have been analyzed in a temperature interval from 0.2 to 300 K.

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Development of high-performance amplifier of ECM-system for ice core analysis and data management

open access: yesAntarctic Record, 1996
An ECM (Electric Conductivity Measurement) apparatus was improved by reconstructing the current meter amplifier. The main improvements were reduction of noise and improvement of reproducibility, and adoption of a floating circuit.
