In-hospital complications and mortality following major lower extremity amputations in a series of predominantly diabetic patients

open access: yes, 2010
The purpose of this study was to analyze the outcomes of major lower extremity amputations (MLEAs) in a series, including diabetic patients, with the aim to study whether diabetes mellitus is a risk factor of in-hospital mortality and perioperative ...

Quantification of lower extremity physical exposures in various combinations of sit/stand time duration associated with sit-stand workstation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Sit-stand workstations are available for office work purposes but there is a dearth of quantitative evidence to state benefits for lower limb outcomes while using them.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Structural integrity of custom-designed additive manufactured prosthetic sockets compared to traditional sockets

open access: yesResults in Materials
Over the past decades, the number of patients with lower extremity amputation increased world-wide. The increasing rate of patients, particularly in developing countries, has led to limited access to clinics and services for prosthetic and orthotic care.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

The Impact of Cast Walker Design on Metabolic Costs of Walking and Perceived Exertion

open access: yesDiabetology
Background/Objectives: Cast walkers (CWs) are often prescribed to offload diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). However, their mass, the degree of ankle immobilization and the limb length discrepancy they induce may increase the energetic demands of walking ...

Lower Extremity Nerve Function in Patients With Lower Extremity Ischemia [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Internal Medicine, 2006
We determined whether lower extremity ischemia, as measured by the ankle brachial index (ABI), is associated with impaired lower extremity nerve function.Participants included 478 persons with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) identified from noninvasive vascular laboratories and 292 persons without PAD identified from a general medicine practice and ...

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Lower extremity compartment syndrome

open access: yesTrauma Surgery & Acute Care Open, 2017
Lower extremity compartment syndrome is a devastating complication if not rapidly diagnosed and properly managed. The classic symptoms of compartment syndrome can be deceiving as they occur late.
