Sensitivity of TEHL simulations to the use of different models for the constitutive behaviour of lubricants

open access: yes, 2023
This study compares the film thickness, lubricant temperature, and traction curves of two groups of commonly used constitutive models for lubricants in thermo-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) modelling.

Thermal and Principal Ablation Properties of Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Polymers with Out-of-Plane Fibre Orientation

open access: yesC, 2021
This work characterises thermal properties of a typical epoxy-based carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer used in aircraft construction, but with an out-of-plane fibre orientation, and assesses its potential as a structural ablative material.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Additives for Improving the Fuel Economy of Diesel Engine Systems

open access: yesTribology Online, 2010
Due to tightening CO2 emission regulations and increasing fuel prices, fuel economy has become one of the greatest issues facing society today. Although molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC) is a well-known friction modifier for gasoline engines, it has ...

Lubrication and Lubricants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Lubrication is a process in which a lubricant is placed between rubbing surfaces to control friction and reduce wear. This article outlines the nature of the frictional force, the wear process, the role of surface characteristics, and the mechanisms of lubrication.

Cathodic Cage Plasma Deposition of Nanostructured Cu–Fe–Se Coatings on Poly(methyl Methacrylate)

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Nanostructured Cu–Fe–Se coatings are deposited on PMMA by a modified cathodic cage plasma process, enabling low‐temperature deposition on polymer substrates. A transition from discontinuous to compact morphology is observed with temperature, with optimal properties at 200°C, where improved CuFeSe2‐type bonding, lowest sheet resistance, and favorable ...

Molecular Dynamics Studies of Shape Memory Polymers: From Bead–Spring Models to Atomistic Simulations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Coarse‐grained (left) and atomistic (right) models of the shape memory polymer ESTANE ETE 75DT3 are shown schematically. The two representations bridge molecular detail and mesoscopic description. Both models capture shape memory behavior, linking segmental mobility and conformational relaxation of anisotropic chains to macroscopic recovery, and ...

Bio-Lubricants Development: The Potential Use of Boron-Containing Additives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper reports the use of boron-containing additives to improve the performance of a bio-based lubricating oil. The base oil was prepared from glycerol and oleic acid, was fortified with antifoaming agent, phenyl-α-naphtylamine, 4,4’-methylene-bis(2 ...

Low Cycle Repetitive Loading of Ti‐6Al‐4V‐Epoxy Composite Lattice Structures for Enhanced Energy Dissipation and Damage Tolerance

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Composite Ti–6Al–4V–epoxy lattice structures are additively manufactured and epoxy infiltrated for cyclic loading. At low lattice volume fractions, hybridization produces synergistic gains in stiffness and energy dissipation. At higher volume fractions, synergy diminishes, although composites still exceed metallic lattices in specific energy ...
