Phenotypic and genetic variation in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus): applications towards sustainable aquaculture of cleaner fish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Ectoparasitic lice threaten sustainable Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) aquaculture, as high farm stocking densities facilitate louse infestation thereby increasing mortality rates.

Role of riboflavin biosynthesis gene duplication and transporter in Aeromonas salmonicida virulence in marine teleost fish

open access: yesVirulence, 2023
Active flavins derived from riboflavin (vitamin B2) are essential for life. Bacteria biosynthesize riboflavin or scavenge it through uptake systems, and both mechanisms may be present.

The effect of temperature and fish size on growth of juvenile lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This study demonstrated that temperatures 7, 10 and 13 °C for weight classes 25 – 200 g induces an overall increase in growth for juvenile lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.)relative to that of temperatures of ambient and 4 °C.

Comparison of Environmental DNA Metabarcoding and Trawl Data Highlights Gear Selectivity of Marine Demersal Fish Surveys on the Faroese Plateau

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
The study compared trawl and eDNA metabarcoding of demersal fish communities in an open ocean environment around the Faroe Islands. eDNA provided a comparable assessment of demersal species biomass and revealed additional spatial information on keystone species known to be under‐sampled by demersal trawls due to size and behavioral traits.

Growth performance, fast muscle development and chemical composition of juvenile lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) fed diets incorporating soy and pea protein concentrates

open access: yesAquaculture Reports, 2020
Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) are widely applied as biological delousers in open net-pen farming of Atlantic salmon. As a species new to farming it is necessary to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the capacity of lumpfish to utilize plant derived ...

Welfare Indicators for Aquaculture Research: Toolboxes for Five Farmed European Fish Species

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Refining approaches to measuring, monitoring and appraising animal welfare in aquaculture research is key to (i) protecting and optimizing it, (ii) documenting the severity of how and when it deviates, and (iii) ensuring good scientific quality, reliable results and reproducibility, amongst other factors.

Practical Diets Formulated With Different Plant‐Based Energy Ingredients Modulate Nutrient Utilization and Gut Morphology in Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum)

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Despite the increasing use of plant‐based energy ingredients in aquaculture, few studies have evaluated the digestibility of practical diets formulated with these ingredients in an integrated manner with the metabolic responses, intestinal health, and productive performance of fish. This limits the understanding of their nutritional effects. This study

Fish Pathogens and Associated Zoonotic Risks in Aquaculture: A Global One Health Perspective

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 5, Issue 6, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aquaculture sector is a key contributor to global food and nutritional security, yet its rapid intensification has heightened concerns about the emergence and spread of zoonotic fish pathogens that threaten human, animal and environmental health.

Fish welfare based classification method of ocean current speeds at aquaculture sites

open access: yesAquaculture Environment Interactions, 2019
A major trend in marine aquaculture is to move production to more exposed sites with occasionally rough ocean current events. However, it is unclear whether fish will thrive in these extreme environments, since thorough descriptions of ambient current ...
