Risk factors for unplanned intensive care unit admission after esophagectomy: a retrospective cohort study of 628 patients with esophageal cancer

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
IntroductionEsophagectomy patients who experience unplanned ICU admission (UIA) may experience a heavier economic burden and worse clinical outcomes than those who experience routine intensive care unit (ICU) admission.

ECMO-assisted resection of huge thoracic mass [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Research, 2018
Some advanced thoracic malignancy cannot be resected safely by using of conventional ventilation, so some sort of cardiopulmonary support is needed for hemodynamic and ventilation management of the patient. Using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)

Biomaterial Strategies for Targeted Intracellular Delivery to Phagocytes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Phagocytes are essential to a functional immune system, and their behavior defines disease outcomes. Engineered particles offer a strategic opportunity to target phagocytes, harnessing inflammatory modulation in disease. By tuning features like size, shape, and surface, these systems can modulate immune responses and improve targeted treatment for a ...

Pediatric lung transplantation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Thoracic Disease, 2017
Pediatric lung transplantation has been undertaken since the 1980s, and it is today considered an accepted therapy option in carefully selected children with end-stage pulmonary diseases, providing carefully selected children a net survival benefit and improved health-related quality of life. Nowadays, >100 pediatric lung transplants are done worldwide

Mechanical Ventilation and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation as a Bridging Strategy to Lung Transplantation: Significant Gains in Survival

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Transplantation, 2018
Mechanical ventilation (MV) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are increasingly used to bridge patients to lung transplantation. We investigated the impact of using MV, with or without ECMO, before lung transplantation on survival after ...

Bioengineering a Patient‐Derived Vascularized Lung Tumor‐on‐Chip Model to Decipher Immunomodulation by the Endothelium

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Most in vitro cancer models lack cellular diversity, functional complexity, and clinical relevance. This work highlights the generation of an innovative dynamic tetraculture with autologous patient‐derived cells within a vascularized tumor‐on‐chip, as well as the recapitulation of endothelial anergy features induced by the tumor microenvironment ...

Left-to-right inverted single-lung transplantation: a case report

open access: yesJournal of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Background Lung transplantation is the most effective treatment for end-stage lung disease. However, the shortage of donor lungs is a major limitation. Inverted lung transplantation has the potential to expand the donor pool and make suitable donor lungs

Synthetic Bilirubin‐Based Nanomedicine Protects Against Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury Through Antioxidant and Immune‐Modulating Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 14, Issue 7, March 14, 2025.
BX‐001N, a polyethylene glycol‐conjugated bilirubin 3α nanoparticle, is the first GMP‐grade, synthetic bilirubin‐based nanomedicine. It effectively attenuates acute renal injury, facilitates subacute renal recovery, and suppresses chronic fibrosis after renal ischemia/reperfusion injury via anti‐oxidant and immune‐modulating activity.
