Background Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a potent stimulator of growth and motility of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Abnormalities of PDGF/PDGF receptor (PDGFR) are thought to contribute to vascular diseases and malignancy.

Increasing Lutein Consumption – Are all Luteins Alike? [PDF]
Epidemiological and intervention studies suggest that lutein may act as a nutritional factor able to modulate visual performance as well as the processes implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of degenerative eye diseases. Since lutein cannot be synthesised by the body, and daily dietary consumption is generally below the level of intake found ...

We demonstrate that high‐resolution multispectral imagery combined with machine learning can accurately predict key biocrust functional indicators, particularly the UV‐protective pigment scytonemin, across dryland ecosystems. Using fine‐scale imagery acquired in the Chihuahuan Desert and Colorado Plateau, we identified spectral bands strongly ...

Lutein- and astaxanthin-fortified eggs can greatly improve both nutritional and economic values of eggs. High doses of lutein and astaxanthin are often supplemented in hen diets to rapidly accumulate lutein and astaxanthin in eggs.

Enrichment of Eggs with Lutein
Lutein is being considered as a nutrient for prevention of macular degeneration in the aging population. Two experiments were designed to study the transfer efficiency of lutein from the layers' diet into the egg. In experiment 1, laying hens were fed corn-soy diets supplemented with 0, 125, 250, 375, 500, 625, 750, or 1000 ppm of lutein.

Staging concept for aging management: Definition, mechanism, and coping strategies
We divided the overall aging stage into “pre‐aging”, “aging compensation”, and “aging disability”. For each stage, we delineate the clinical presentations, biological phenomena, theoretical underpinnings, and key management priorities. Abstract Aging, as a gradual and largely irreversible biological process, characterized by declining organismal ...

The Absorption Rate of Lutein Associated with Time of Incubation and Concentration Gradient of Lutein in Transfected HEK293 Cells. [PDF]
(A) Time course of cellular uptake of lutein into the transfected HEK293 cells. The lutein absorption rate in the cells expressing Cameo2+CBP increased with the prolonged incubation time and achieved plateau after 8 h incubation.

Protective effect of silk lutein on ultraviolet B-irradiated human keratinocytes
Carotenoids are efficient antioxidants that are of great importance for human health. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotinoids present in high concentrations in the human retina which are involved in the photoprotection of the human eye.

Ocular Manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome: A Systemic Vascular Phenotype
ABSTRACT Context Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined by central obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension and dyslipidemia. MetS affects over one‐third of US adults. Beyond its cardiovascular burden, MetS has clinically relevant associations with ocular health and may contribute to a systemic vascular and neuro‐metabolic phenotype involving the retina,
