Skin microbiome engineering: Challenges and opportunities in skin diseases treatment
The skin microbiome plays a crucial role in skin health, influencing barrier integrity, immune responses, and disease susceptibility. Various interventions can reshape the microbiome, broadly categorized into targeted and untargeted approaches. Targeted strategies, such as phage therapy, engineered bacteria, and phage lysins, selectively modulate ...

Prevalence, Host Range, and Comparative Genomic Analysis of Temperate Ochrobactrum Phages
Ochrobactrum and Brucella are closely related bacteria that populate different habitats and differ in their pathogenic properties. Only little is known about mobile genetic elements in these genera which might be important for survival and virulence ...

In this study, we found evidence of phage‐mediated horizontal transfer of virulence genes in Salmonella enterica in global habitats from a molecular evolutionary perspective. Notably, csrA, a global regulator in Salmonella enterica, curbed horizontal gene transfer by inhibiting the cyclization and release of prophage.

Variability and host density independence in inductions-based estimates of environmental lysogeny. [PDF]
Temperate bacterial viruses (phages) may enter a symbiosis with their host cell, forming a unit called a lysogen. Infection and viral replication are disassociated in lysogens until an induction event such as DNA damage occurs, triggering viral-mediated ...

This study presents a multilayer system (MS) based on benzophenone‐modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a thermo‐responsive core incorporating P(NIPAAm‐co‐NIPMAAm), gelatin, and gelatin methacrylate (GelMA). The photothermal properties of gold nanorods, together with the thermal sensitivity of hydrogel, enable controlled detachment and release of ...

Adsorbable and Antimicrobial Amphiphilic Block Copolymers with Enhanced Biocompatibility
Permanently implanted biomaterials are prone to attract microorganisms and thus represent niches for infections in vivo. Absorbable, antimicrobial polymers have emerged as a promising option. To improve the compatibility of adsorbable antimicrobial polymers with human cells, the block composition of the polycationic segment is modified regarding the ...

A Short Introduction to Bacteriophages
First discovered in the 19th century, bacteriophages (phages) are bacterial viruses and the most widespread entities on earth. Phages have multiple important roles in maintaining the bacterial population, carbon cycling, bacterial pathogenicity, and ...

Transient-mediated fate determination in a transcriptional circuit of HIV [PDF]
Steady-state behavior and bistability have been proposed as mechanisms for decision-making in gene circuits. However, transient gene expression has also been proposed to control cell fate with the decision arbitrated by the lifetime of the expression ...

ABSTRACT Bacteriophages, or phages (viruses of bacteria), play significant roles in shaping the diversity of bacterial communities within the human gut. A phage‐infected bacterial cell can either immediately undergo lysis (virulent/lytic infection) or enter a stable state within the host as a prophage (lysogeny) until a trigger event, called prophage ...

Cryptic Lysogeny in Proteus mirabilis
Summary Proteus mirabilis strains 13 and 5006 on rare occasions liberate temperate phages, 13M and 5006M, which may reinfect parent strains. These prophages are not inducible but the probability of phage liberation may be increased by growth in nitrosoguanidine. P. mirabilis strain 34 liberates a phage, φ34, spontaneously. Strain 34 is doubly lysogenic
