Robust estimation of key leaf traits from reflectance spectroscopy of herbarium specimens

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Community‐wide efforts to digitize herbarium specimens have facilitated novel uses of specimen data across scales. However, the need for destructive sampling has prevented large‐scale examination of foliar functional traits. We demonstrate that nondestructive reflectance spectra are an effective tool for estimating leaf traits from herbarium ...

Is there a role for cannabidiol in obesity, metabolic syndrome and binge eating?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most abundant phytocannabinoids isolated from the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is a lipophilic, non‐intoxicating substance that differently from Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9‐THC) does not present the typical profile of a drug of abuse.

Co‐Culture of Mammalian Cells and Photosynthetic Microorganisms for Oxygen Supply in Engineered Tissues

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Continuous 28‐day light exposure alters behaviours of articular cartilage progenitor cells (ACPCs) and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Co‐culture with Leptolyngbya and Synechococcus does not adversely affect the chondrogenic capacity of ACPCs over a 28‐day period, in contrast to co‐culture with Chlorella.

Ketogenic Diet Alleviates Colorectal Cancer by Attenuating Macrophage M2 Polarisation Triggered by Oncometabolite MMA Derived From the Gut Microbiota

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Proposed mechanism of the ketogenic diet‐microbiota‐MMA‐immune axis in CRC. (Part 1) A ketogenic diet remodels gut microbiota homeostasis by depleting MMA‐producing bacteria, thereby reducing the accumulation of the oncometabolite (MMA). (Part 2) At the molecular level, MMA acts as a ligand that binds to Rap1, activating the downstream MAPK/ERK ...

Effects of Calorie Restriction With and Without Strength, Endurance or Mixed Training on Fat‐Free and Skeletal Muscle Mass in Overweight or Obese Individuals—A Systematic Review With Pairwise Meta‐Analysis and Network Meta‐Analysis of Randomized Controlled Studies

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims Calorie restriction (CR) reduces both fat mass and fat‐free mass (FFM), particularly skeletal muscle mass (SMM), which is essential for cardiometabolic health and preventing frailty. This study compares CR alone versus CR plus exercise (EX) on FFM and SMM in overweight/obese patients and examines the effects of different training modes ...

Randomised Controlled Multicentre Trial to Investigate the Effectiveness of a Mobile Artificial Intelligence Solution for Diabetes Adapted Care: The MELISSA Trial Protocol

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims Achieving optimal glycaemic control remains a burden for many people with diabetes on intensive insulin treatment. The MELISSA trial aims to clinically validate the artificial intelligence (AI)‐based MELISSA system to support people with Type 1 diabetes on multiple daily insulin injections (MDI) with personalised insulin dose ...
