Genomic Investigations Unveil the Genetic Underpinnings of Environmental Adaptation in African Goat Populations

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study integrates genomics and landscape genetics to analyze African goat environmental adaptation. Analyzing 1591 samples, it finds population structure differentiates geographically into four groups, with gene flow between wild Yura goats and North Africans.

Parental Age, Inbreeding and Incubation Method Influence Extremely Low Hatching Success in the Ex‐Situ Population of the Extinct in the Wild Sihek

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Reproductive success rates are a key parameter determining the recovery potential of ex‐situ managed threatened species, with high rates often being required to produce offspring for wild releases while ensuring ex situ population viability. Here, we quantify reproductive success rates in the Extinct in the Wild sihek (Guam kingfisher) and find ...

Microhaplotype Methods Enable Relationship Inference in a Bottlenecked Mammalian Species

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) are among the most genetically depauperate mammals in the world. A near‐total population bottleneck in the 19th century, coupled with the breeding system of extreme polygyny, has challenged efforts to estimate individual reproductive success with genetic methods.

Exploring the genetic overlap between substance use disorder and educational attainment

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and aims Substance use disorder (SUD) is a polygenic psychiatric condition characterized by persistent drug use despite negative consequences. Several studies support that higher cognitive performance and educational attainment (EA) are associated with a reduced risk for SUD.

Bidirectional genetic and phenotypic links between smoking and striatal iron content involving dopaminergic and inflammatory pathways

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and aims Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and lung diseases. A better understanding of its neurobiological underpinnings will benefit the prevention of smoking‐related illnesses and mortality. Previous studies link smoking to increased iron concentration in the striatum, a central component of the brain's ...
