Our modern society requires environmentally friendly solutions for energy production. Energy can be released not only from the fission of heavy nuclei but also from the fusion of light nuclei. Nuclear fusion is an important option for a clean and safe solution for our long-term energy needs.

Equilibrium of a Magnetically Confined Plasma in a Toroid
The Physics of Fluids, 1958A variety of properties are derived satisfied by any static equilibrium of a plasma governed by the well-known magnetostatic equations. Some of these are local and quite trivial. Others involve integrals over surfaces of constant pressure, which are shown to be topologically toroidal under fairly general assumptions.

The theoretical plasma confinement times for an electromagnetic trap, which is an electrostatically plugged magnetic cusp device, are calculated. The plasma may be produced by electron beam injection or by other methods. Electron losses along field lines are inhibited by negative electrodes (cathodes) placed at the cusp openings.

Magnetically Confined Plasma with a Maxwellian Core
Physical Review, 1962While a magnetically confined plasma cannot have a Maxwellian velocity distribution at each point, it is shown that a high beta Maxwellian plasma containing no magnetic fields can exist when separated by a non-Maxwellian boundary layer from the region of no plasma and homogeneous confining magnetic field. The propagation of high-velocity shock waves in an axial maganetic field generated by single-turn coils connected in parallel to a condenser bank is investigated. Time-resolved photographs show that the plasma behind the shock front is driven away from the tube walls by the maganetic pressure, This compression heats the ionized gas and maintains a high

On the confinement of magnetic poles
2008The mathematical description of quantum mechanics of charged particles in the field of magnetic monopoles seems to reach a rather consistent level. As we have seen, there might even be a natural mechanism which provides the confinement of magnetic poles. In principle, this could be checked by solving the Dirac equation for an electron in the field of a

Confinement of Charged Particles by a Magnetic Field
Nature, 1958Confinement of charged particles by axially symmetrical, stationary magnetic fields and electric fields is discussed. It is shown that if the coil connections are made as small as possible and if the magnetic field, in the neighborhood of the connections, from the supply current predominates over the field from the coil, particles will be reflected and

Energy Balance and Confinement of a Magnetized Plasma
Reviews of Modern Physics, 1960Under laboratory conditions particle losses from a magnetized plasma will produce a neutral particle flux reentering from the surrounding vessel walls into the plasma region. Even at very high temperatures, where the plasma is almost fully ionized, this gives rise to interactions between charged and neutral particles which cannot always be neglected ...
