Observation of Magnetoelectric Directional Anisotropy

Physical Review Letters, 2002
We report the first observation of a new optical phenomenon, magnetoelectric directional anisotropy (MEA). MEA is a polarization-independent anisotropy which occurs in crossed electric field E and magnetic field B perpendicular to the wave vector k of the light. It is described by a contribution to the refractive index of the form (delta)n=(gamma)k x E

Magnetoelectric Composites

Annual Review of Materials Research, 2010
In a composite of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases, mechanical strain mediates magnetoelectric (ME) coupling between the magnetic and the electric subsystems. This review discusses recent advances in the physics of ME interactions in layered composites and nanostructures and potential device applications.
