Carnitine in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients
Journal of Renal Nutrition, 2015Carnitine is a conditionally essential metabolite that plays a critical role in cell physiology. Carnitine is necessary for fatty acid transport to sites of beta-oxidation in the mitochondria, where it also helps to prevent organic acid accumulation. Because of these key regulatory functions, carnitine represents a crucial determinant of mitochondrial ...

Ascites in Patients Treated with Maintenance Hemodialysis
Nephron, 2008Eight patients treated with maintenance hemodialysis developed significant ascites. Fluid retention appears to be a common denominator. Increased capillary permeability from uremia may be a contributory factor. Compartmentalization of ascitic and nonascitic fluids is often observed.

Accelerated Atherosclerosis in Prolonged Maintenance Hemodialysis
New England Journal of Medicine, 1974Abstract The survival experience of 39 patients receiving long-term regular hemodialysis in Seattle since 1960 was studied with particular reference to mortality and morbidity from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular complications. Mean age (± 1 S.D.) was 37.0 ± 9.5 years for the group at the start of dialysis.

Experience with Maintenance Hemodialysis
Nephron, 2008During the first 7 years of a maintenance hemodialysis program, 14 of 55 patients (25%) died. The loss of patients was constant throughout the period, 4 of 55 (8%) dying during the first and 1 of 10 (10%) during the seventh year of dialysis treatment. Congestive heart failure following the insertion of a femoral artery shunt accounted for the death of ...

Hand Function in Patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis
Physical Therapy, 1988The purpose of this study was to assess characteristics of hand function in 30 subjects on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) with a forearm vascular access. Hand function was evaluated by measuring subjects' grip and pinch strength, range of motion, edema, and sensation and with the Grip Function Test and self-assessment scale.

Maintenance Hemodialysis-Reply
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1981In Reply.— Whether or not hypertension and an elevated calcium-phosphate product are truly independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease in hemodialysis patients is a point fairly made. It is apparent that patients who are hypertensive are also more likely to have an elevated calcium-phosphate product, because they are noncompliant.

Psychosocial disability during maintenance hemodialysis
General Hospital Psychiatry, 1981Overall psychosocial functioning was assessed in 21 maintenance hemodialysis patients. The Ruesch Social Disability Scale, which provides an overall Social Disability (DS) score as well as subscores for Physical Impairment (PI), Behavioral Impairment (BI), and Social Modifiers (MS), was utilized. A majority of the patients (13) experienced Major Social
