P2X7 receptor‐mediated purinergic signaling is a well‐known mechanism involved in bone remodeling. The P2X7 receptor has been implicated in the pathophysiology of various bone and cartilage diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a widespread and complex chronic inflammatory disorder. The P2X7 receptor induces the release into the synovial fluid

Maitotoxin, a Ca2+ channel activator candidate.
Effects of maitotoxin, the most potent marine toxin, were studied using a rat pheochromocytoma cell line, PC12h. A low concentration (10(-8) g/ml) of maitotoxin induced a profound increase in CA2+ influx into PC12h cells and the Ca2+-dependent release of [3H]norepinephrine from them.

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of QRSTUVWXYZA′ Domains of Maitotoxin [PDF]
The synthesis of QRSTUVWXYZA' domains 7, 8, and 9 of the highly potent marine neurotoxin maitotoxin (1), the largest secondary metabolite isolated to date, is described. The devised synthetic strategy entailed a cascade Takai-Utimoto ester olefination/ring closing metathesis to construct ring Y, a hydroxydithioketal cyclization/methylation sequence to ...

Abstract In France, the presence of marine microalgae of the genus Ostreopsis has been identified repeatedly on the Mediterranean coast for several years, whereas on the French Basque coasts its presence is much more recent. In the summers of 2021 and 2022, major Ostreopsis flowering episodes were reported on the Basque coast, resulting in several ...

Role of the Inflammasome, IL‐1β, and IL‐18 in Bacterial Infections
The inflammasome is an important innate immune pathway that regulates at least two host responses protective against infections: (1) secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines IL‐1β and IL‐18 and (2) induction of pyroptosis, a form of cell death. Inflammasomes, of which different types have been identified, are multiprotein complexes containing pattern

Addressing the safety of new food sources and production systems
Abstract New food sources and production systems (NFPS) are garnering much attention, driven by international trade, changing consumer preferences, potential sustainability benefits, and innovations in climate‐resilient food production systems. However, NFPS can introduce new challenges for food safety agencies and food manufacturers.

Detection of Ciguatoxins and Tetrodotoxins in Seafood with Biosensors and Other Smart Bioanalytical Systems [PDF]
The emergence of marine toxins such as ciguatoxins (CTXs) and tetrodotoxins (TTXs) in non-endemic regions may pose a serious food safety threat and public health concern if proper control measures are not applied. This article provides an overview of the

Character evolution of the benthic thecate dinoflagellate, gambierdiscus (Dinophyceae), with an introduction of the interactive key to species [PDF]
The genus Gambierdiscus is one of the benthic marine dinoflagellates that are known to produce biotoxins, causing ciguatera food poisoning (CFP) in humans after consuming the contaminated marine fishes. These benthic marine dinoflagellates are commonly
