Induced cytomictic diversity in maize (Zea mays L.) inbred [PDF]

open access: yesCytology and Genetics, 2010
Mutation breeding has been used for improving oligogenic and polygenic characters, disease resistance and quantitative characters including yielding ability. The cytological stability of maize inbred lines is an important consideration in view of their extensive use in genetics and plant breeding research. Investigation in Zea mays L. confirms that the

Transcriptome-Wide Association Supplements Genome-Wide Association in Zea mays. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Modern improvement of complex traits in agricultural species relies on successful associations of heritable molecular variation with observable phenotypes. Historically, this pursuit has primarily been based on easily measurable genetic markers.

Sewage Sludge and Cashew Bagasse Biochars Promote Changes in Selected Physical Attributes Related to the Structure of Degraded Dryland Soil

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
This study evaluated biochars from co‐pyrolysis of sewage sludge and cashew residues on physical quality of a degraded loamy sand soil. SPB applied at 20 Mg ha−1 reduced bulk density by 7.74%, whereas most porosity attributes were driven by soil reconsolidation rather than biochar. Aggregate stability varied with biochar type, with SPB promoting larger

This note reports the occurrence of the parasitoid Trissolcus sp. (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) parasitizing eggs of Leptoglassus zonatus (Hemiptera: Coreidae) on maize crop (Zea mays L.) in Itumbiara County, State of Goiás, Brazil.

Effects of Biochar and Maize Roots on CO2 Emissions and Microbial Biomass C in Loess Soils

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Refractory substances such as biochar and labile substances such as dead fine and coarse roots play important roles in soil organic matter dynamics and have key ecological functions. However, interactions between these substances have only rarely been studied.

Comparing autumn duck use of intensely managed wetlands in Michigan using a novel approach

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Camera traps, a relatively novel method for assessing waterfowl use of wetlands, show ducks in southeastern Michigan are influenced by hunting disturbance, vegetation type, season progression, and diel period. Abstract Socioeconomic value derived from duck hunting has contributed to autumn habitat use becoming a particular focus for the natural ...

Aphidophagous Coccinellids in Alfalfa, Small Grains, and Maize in Eastern South Dakota [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In a 13-year study of aphidophagous coccinellids associated with alfalfa (Medicago sativa), maize (Zea mays), and small grain crops in eastern South Dakota, the following species were consistently associated with the crops: Hippodamia convergens, H ...

Stability analysis in maize ( Zea mays L.)

open access: yesELECTRONIC JOURNAL OF PLANT BREEDING, 2020
Thirteen maize genotypes were assessed for their stability under different environments for eleven characters. G x E interaction was linear in nature for days to 50% of flowering, Days to 50% of silking, days to maturity, Ear girth (cm), The number of grains per row per ear, fodder yield per plant and grain yield per plant.

Biochar‐Induced Shifts in Fungal Community Structure and Their Association With Soil Physical Properties in Degraded Soil From the Brazilian Semiarid

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soil degradation compromises ecosystem functioning. Biochar, a carbon‐rich amendment, has gained attention as a promising strategy to enhance soil structure and restore microbial balance. This study investigated the effects of two biochars, cashew bagasse biochar (CBB) and a co‐pyrolyzed biochar produced from sewage sludge and cashew pruning ...
