Salient features in locomotor evolutionary adaptations of proboscideans revealed via the differential scaling of limb long bones [PDF]
The standard differential scaling of proportions in limb long bones (length against circumference) is applied to a phylogenetically wide sample of the Proboscidea, Elephantidae and the Asian (Elephas maximus) and African elephant (Loxodonta africana). In order to investigate allometric patterns in proboscideans and terrestrial mammals with parasagittal

The Status of the World's Land and Marine Mammals: Diversity, Threat, and Knowledge
Knowledge of mammalian diversity is still surprisingly disparate, both regionally and taxonomically. Here, we present a comprehensive assessment of the conservation status and distribution of the world's mammals.

ICP34.5 is one of the most important antihost response proteins. The saRNA‐encoding HSV‐1 neurovirulence protein ICP34.5 clearly mediated the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha subunit (eIF2α) dephosphorylation and significant suppression of innate immune responses in vitro, leading to enhanced expression of the saRNA‐encoded gene.

Innate humoral immune defences in mammals and insects: The same, with differences ?
The insect immune response demonstrates many similarities to the innate immune response of mammals and a wide range of insects is now employed to assess the virulence of pathogens and produce results comparable to those obtained using mammals.

Calcium modulating ligand confers risk for Parkinson's disease and impacts lysosomes
Abstract Objective Several genetic loci known to confer risk for Parkinson's disease (PD) function in lysosomal pathways. We systematically screened common variants linked to PD risk by genome‐wide association studies (GWAS) for impact on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins reflecting lysosomal function.

Movement is a fundamental aspect of animal ecology that varies across space, time, and among individuals or groups within a population. Broad‐scale patterns of animal movement are often classified into different movement strategies, such as resident ...

Amygdala Neurodegeneration: A Key Driver of Visual Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease
ABSTRACT Objective Visual disability in Parkinson's disease (PD) is not fully explained by retinal neurodegeneration. We aimed to delineate the brain substrate of visual dysfunction in PD and its association with retinal thickness. Methods Forty‐two PD patients and 29 controls underwent 3‐Tesla MRI, retinal spectral‐domain optical coherence tomography,

Abnormal Synchronization Between Cortical Delta Power and Ripples in Hippocampal Sclerosis
ABSTRACT Objective Discriminating between epileptogenic and physiological ripples in the hippocampus is important for identifying epileptogenic (EP) zones; however, distinguishing these ripples on the basis of their waveforms is difficult. We hypothesized that the nocturnal synchronization of hippocampal ripples and cortical delta power could be used ...

Lineage-specific transposons drove massive gene expression recruitments during the evolution of pregnancy in mammals [PDF]
A major challenge in biology is explaining how novel characters originate, however, the molecular mechanisms that underlie the emergence of evolutionary innovations are unclear. Here we show that while gene expression in the uterus evolves at a slow and relatively constant rate, it has been punctuated by periods of rapid change associated with the ...

DNA methylation is one of the best characterized epigenetic modifications. In mammals it is involved in various biological processes including the silencing of transposable elements, regulation of gene expression, genomic imprinting, and X-chromosome ...
