Publisher Summary Marek's disease (MD)—a malignant lymphomatosis in chickens—is caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV) of the family Herpesviridae. This chapter reviews recent advances in MD research, especially in the field of molecular biology. Various antigens present in MDV virions, MDV-infected cells, or MD lymphoma cells have been suspected as ...

A study of vaccination against Marek's disease with an attenuated Marek's disease virus
Avian Pathology, 1974Approximately 2,000 day-old white leghorn chickens were distributed into 10 pens and half the pens vaccinated with the attenuated strain of HPRS-16. At 72 weeks of age, mortality from non-specific death and Marek's disease was 17.6% and 15.6% respectively, in vaccinated chickens compared with 14.2% and 51.7% in unvaccinated chickens.

Cyclophosphamide-Induced Amelioration of Marek's Disease in Marek's Disease-Susceptible Chickens
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1976SUMMARY Bursa- and thymus-dependent functions were examined in Marek's disease (md)-susceptible normal chickens and in chickens treated with 5 and 16 mg of cyclophosphamide (cy) at the time of hatching. Chickens not exposed to Marek's disease virus (mdv) and treated with cy temporarily lost mitogenic response to concanavalin A but regained full ...

Genomics and Marek’s disease virus
Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 2007Marek’s disease virus (MDV), a lymphotrophic alphaherpesvirus of chickens, causes a disease that is characterized by tumor formation, immunosuppression and neurological disorders. Recent developments in chicken genomics have been applied to studies of MDV and have advanced our understanding of both the virus and the disease it causes.

Herpesvirus in Marek's Disease Tumors
Science, 1969Intranuclear and cytoplasmic virus particles of the herpes type were located in epithelial cells that line the kidney collecting tubules obtained from a chick with Marek's disease. The chick had contracted the disease by direct contact transmission. The virus was not observed in any of the invading tumor cells in the same kidney.

Hematopoietic Destruction in Marek's Disease
Avian Diseases, 1970Hematopoietic destructive lesions, characterized by necrosis and loss of architecture in the bursa of Fabricius and thymus, were observed consistently in second-generation specific-pathogen-free X Line 7 (SPF X L7-F2) cross chickens inoculated at 1 day with an acute form of Marek's disease (MD) agent.
