The development of an inability or an unwillingness to communicate verbally after inhaling marijuana is incidentally reported in the literature. The author cites four cases in which mutism is associated with the inhalation of hashish. There was evidence of organic brain syndrome in all patients.

Short-term effects of marijuana smoking include bronchodilatation; long-term effects on the respiratory tree appear comparable with those of heavy cigarette use. Contamination of marijuana with paraquat, a potent herbicide, does not at this time appear to constitute a significant hazard to the lungs.
