New evidence of pectenotoxins in farmed bivalve molluscs from Sardinia (Italy)

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2021
Several planktonic dinoflagellates can produce lipophilic phycotoxins that represent a significant threat to public health as well as to shellfish and fish farming.

Flow Cytometric-Membrane Potential Detection of Sodium Channel Active Marine Toxins: Application to Ciguatoxins in Fish Muscle and Feasibility of Automating Saxitoxin Detection

open access: yesJournal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL, 2014
Abstract Ciguatoxins are potent neurotoxins with a significant public health impact. Cytotoxicity assays have allowed the most sensitive means of detection of ciguatoxin-like activity without reliance on mouse bioassays and have been invaluable in studying outbreaks.

Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

Investigating diet as the source of tetrodotoxin in Pleurobranchaea maculata [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The origin of tetrodotoxin (TTX) is highly debated; researchers have postulated either an endogenous or exogenous source with the host accumulating TTX symbiotically or via food chain transmission.
