dUTPase is essential in zebrafish development and possesses several single‐nucleotide variants with pronounced structural and functional consequences

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
dUTPases are involved in balancing the appropriate nucleotide pools. We showed that dUTPase is essential for normal development in zebrafish. The different zebrafish genomes contain several single‐nucleotide variations (SNPs) of the dut gene. One of the dUTPase variants displayed drastically lower protein stability and catalytic efficiency as compared ...

Combustion Evolution of Aviation Kerosene Pools in Confined Spaces Under Mechanical Negative Pressure

open access: yesFire
This study experimentally investigates the combustion behavior of RP-3 aviation kerosene pool fires (300~800 mm) within a confined space, specifically focusing on the complex interaction between buoyancy-driven plumes and mechanical negative pressure ...

Multi‐omics and low‐input proteomics profiling reveals dynamic regulation driving pluripotency initiation in early mouse embryos

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mouse pre‐implantation development involves a transition from totipotency to pluripotency. Integrating transcriptomics, epigenetic profiling, low‐input proteomics and functional assays, we show that eight‐cell embryos retain residual totipotency features, whereas cytoskeletal remodeling regulated by the ubiquitin‐proteasome system drives progression ...

Improved Prediction of Freeze–Thaw Resistance of Steel-Fiber-Reinforced Concrete in Cold-Region Tunnels Based on Machine Learning

open access: yesBuildings
The durability and serviceability of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) tunnel linings in cold regions are significantly challenged by repeated freeze–thaw actions, making the accurate prediction of frost resistance a critical engineering problem ...

The Shaping of the Red Rectangle Proto-Planetary Nebula

open access: yes, 2004
I argue that the slowly expanding biconical structure of the Red Rectangle--a nebula around the post asymptotic giant branch binary stellar system HD 44179--can be formed by intermittent jets blown by the accreting companion.

Masses of Classical Cepheids and Mass Loss Rate at Pre-Cepheid Stage [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1977
The mass-luminosity relation for single-mode Cepheids obtained by Saio, Kobayashi, and Takeuti (1977) indicates that the masses of classical Cepheids seem to be less than those that result from evolutionary calculations without substantial mass loss. The mass loss rate at the red giant phase should be 10−5 solar masses per year.

Dapagliflozin prevents methylglyoxal‐induced retinal cell death in ARPE‐19 cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Diabetic macular oedema is a diabetes complication of the eye, which may lead to permanent blindness. ARPE‐19 are human retinal cells used to study retinal diseases and potential therapeutics. Methylglyoxal is a compound increased in uncontrolled diabetes due to elevated blood glucose.

On the Effect of Magnetic Spots on Stellar Winds and Angular Momentum Loss

open access: yes, 2009
We simulate the effect of latitudinal variations in the location of star spots, as well as their magnetic field strength, on stellar angular momentum loss to the stellar wind.

Anchorage‐independent and faster growth in clonal population from UV‐irradiated NER‐deficient cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UV‐irradiated cells expressing a DDB2 mutant protein unable to interact with PCNA (DDB2PCNA‐) form clones able to grow without anchorage. Different experimental approaches reveal heterogeneity in cell cycle regulation and drug response within these clones, emphasizing the crucial role of the DDB2‐PCNA interaction in preventing cellular transformation ...
