Effect of maternal odor on the cardiac rate of maternally separated infant rats
Physiology & Behavior, 1977Abstract Infant rat pups show a consistent deceleratory cardiac response when separated from their mothers. In pups isolated for 2 hr, the presentation of maternal odors brought about an abrupt acceleration of heart rate. The presentation of the odor of a nonlactating female rat, or no odor, had no effect on the declining cardiac rate.
