Maternal Separation Anxiety

1988
One clear conclusion from the research on the effects of maternal employment is that the relationships among employment, maternal beliefs, attitudes and practices, and child development are complex and require consideration of many factors. Stolz (1960), in one of the first reviews of the topic, concluded that a striking characteristic of the research ...

Maternal attachment and separation

1984
Perhaps the most influential contributions to the subject of attachment behaviour have been made by John Bowlby. Since the publication of his monograph for the World Health Organization in 1951, Bowlby has maintained that the mental health of the child is dependent on the warm and continuous relationship with his mother.

Maternal behavior and offspring resiliency to maternal separation in c57bl/6 mice

Hormones and Behavior, 2013
Adverse early life experience, such as childhood abuse, neglect, and trauma, increases lifetime risk for mental illness. To investigate underlying mechanisms, the maternal separation (MS) paradigm was developed and validated as an animal model of early adversity in rats, reliably effecting long-term changes to anxiety, gene expression, and stress ...

Maternal separation impairs mother's cognition 1 month beyond the separation

International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience, 2021
AbstractObjectiveSeparation of pups from their dam during the infancy not only has detrimental effects on the pups' brain but also affects dams' behavior. Postpartum stress may affect mothers' cognitive functions. In the present study, by using a 180‐min day−1 maternal separation (MS) paradigm, we assessed anxiety‐like behavior and locomotor activity ...

Effect of maternal odor on the cardiac rate of maternally separated infant rats

Physiology & Behavior, 1977
Abstract Infant rat pups show a consistent deceleratory cardiac response when separated from their mothers. In pups isolated for 2 hr, the presentation of maternal odors brought about an abrupt acceleration of heart rate. The presentation of the odor of a nonlactating female rat, or no odor, had no effect on the declining cardiac rate.

Responses of maternal and non-maternal ewes to social and mother-young separation

Behavioural Processes, 1994
The response to social deprivation in non-maternal non-pregnant ewes was compared with that in post-parturient ewes kept with their lamb. In addition, the response to separation from the lamb was investigated in lactating ewes at times ranging from 24 h to 2 months post partum. Ewes were observed for 5 min in a 2 × 4 m pen, either in the presence or in

Maternal Separation Anxiety in Infancy: Precursors and Outcomes

Child Psychiatry and Human Development, 1998
The relationships among aspects of mothers' childhood memories, her maternal anxiety--when separated from her infant and the child's attachment pattern were studied with 58 low risk dyads participating in a longitudinal investigation. It was found that mother's perceived relationships with her own mother significantly predicted her offspring's ...
