Neuid: A Novel Neuron‐Enriched LncRNA that Connects Epigenetic Gene Silencing to Alzheimer's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The increasing evidence that non‐coding RNAs can become deregulated during pathogenesis is dramatically expanding the space for drug discovery beyond the protein‐coding genome. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as key regulators of cellular function, yet most remain uncharacterized.

Electrical Polarization Enables Integrative Quality Control during Bacterial Differentiation into Spores

open access: yesiScience, 2019
Summary: Quality control of offspring is important for the survival of cells. However, the mechanisms by which quality of offspring cells may be checked while running genetic programs of cellular differentiation remain unclear.

Gemella morbillorum Promotes Colorectal Carcinogenesis: LPBDCP‐Mediated Invasion Activates Ras Signaling and Destabilizes p53

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes colorectal cancer (CRC) tumorigenesis. A global fecal metagenomic analysis identified Gemella morbillorum as a key contributor to the CRC‐associated microbiota. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that Gemella morbillorum is enriched in CRC tumor tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues.

An opponent process for alcohol addiction based on changes in endocrine gland mass

open access: yesiScience, 2021
Summary: Consuming addictive drugs is often initially pleasurable, but escalating drug intake eventually recruits physiological anti-reward systems called opponent processes that cause tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. Opponent processes are fundamental

Body Mass Dynamics Is Determined by the Metabolic Ohm's Law and Adipocyte-Autonomous Fat Mass Homeostasis

open access: yesiScience, 2020
Summary: An ODE model integrating metabolic mechanisms with clinical data reveals an Ohm's law governing lifetime body mass dynamics, where fat and lean tissues are analogous to a parallel nonlinear capacitor and resistor, respectively.

On the Integral of Fractional Poisson Processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper we consider the Riemann--Liouville fractional integral $\mathcal{N}^{\alpha,\nu}(t)= \frac{1}{\Gamma(\alpha)} \int_0^t (t-s)^{\alpha-1}N^\nu(s) \, \mathrm ds $, where $N^\nu(t)$, $t \ge 0$, is a fractional Poisson process of order $\nu \in (

Preface for the special issue of Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering, BIOCOMP 2012 [PDF]

open access: yesMathematical Biosciences and Engineering, 2014
The International Conference ``BIOCOMP2012 - Mathematical Modeling and Computational Topics in Biosciences'',was held in Vietri sul Mare (Italy), June 4-8, 2012. It was dedicated to the Memory of Professor Luigi M. Ricciardi(1942-2011), who was a visionary and tireless promoter of the 3 previous editions of the BIOCOMP conference series. We thought that

Endoplasmic Reticulum Geometry Dictates Neuronal Bursting via Calcium Store Refill Rates and Exposes Selective Neuronal Vulnerability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The ER's continuous tubular network is maintained by ER‐shaping proteins whose mutation or dysregulation contributes to neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we show that ER morphology sets the speed of Ca2+ store replenishment between firing events. Disrupting ER continuity slows intra‐ER Ca2+ redistribution from extracellular refill (SOCE) sites, driving

Coupling gene expression dynamics to cell size dynamics and cell cycle events: Exact and approximate solutions of the extended telegraph model

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: The standard model describing the fluctuations of mRNA numbers in single cells is the telegraph model which includes synthesis and degradation of mRNA, and switching of the gene between active and inactive states. While commonly used, this model
