Mathematical Modelling as a Professional Activity: Lessons for the Classroom
This chapter presents a discussion about similarities and differences between working with mathematical modelling in ‘school’ and mathematical modelling as a ‘professional task’ in the workplace based on empirical and theoretical research studies. Issues

This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Mathematical Modelling in Neuroendocrinology [PDF]
In neuroendocrinology, mathematical modelling is about formalising our understanding of the behaviour of the complex biological systems with which we deal. Formulating our explanations mathematically ensures their logical consistency, and makes them open to structured analysis; it is a stringent test of their intellectual coherence.

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

An antimicrobial drug recommender system using MALDI-TOF MS and dual-branch neural networks
Timely and effective use of antimicrobial drugs can improve patient outcomes, as well as help safeguard against resistance development. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is currently routinely ...

The Lost Art of Mathematical Modelling
We provide a critique of mathematical biology in light of rapid developments in modern machine learning. We argue that out of the three modelling activities -- (1) formulating models; (2) analysing models; and (3) fitting or comparing models to data ...

Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Adult Learning in STEM Disciplines
ABSTRACT Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are reshaping adult learning in STEM by providing adaptive, data‐driven instruction across classrooms, workplaces, and informal environments. In the context of ITS, this article compares generative AI, which creates personalized explanations and practice materials, with explainable AI, which focuses on ...

Quantifying the Impact of Ocrelizumab on Paramagnetic Rim Lesions in Multiple Sclerosis
ABSTRACT Paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs) are a subset of chronic active multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions marked by iron‐laden microglia and macrophages. Ocrelizumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting CD20+ B cells, suppresses acute MS activity, but its effect on PRLs remains unclear. In a longitudinal study of 29 ocrelizumab‐treated patients with at least
