Injuries according to sexual maturity status: a three-season observational study with male academy players of a professional Spanish football club

open access: yesBiology of Sport
The current literature suggests that football (soccer) players’ age and maturity status affect the likelihood of sustaining certain injuries; however, few studies have used indicators of sexual maturity.

Comparing sex hormones levels in Acipenser persicus at the onset of autumnal migration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Levels of two main steroid hormones in gonads, 17-B Stradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) were compared in males and females of Persian sturgeon at the start of autumnal migration to spawning rivers.

Dynamic analysis of competition and complementarity for light and N use to understand the yield and the protein content of a durum wheat-winter pea intercrop [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In a previous paper (Bedoussac and Justes 2009, Plant and Soil DOI: 10.1007/s11104-009-0082-2), we showed that intercropping of durum wheat and winter pea increased the yield and protein concentration of durum wheat when early N availability was less ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Effect of Harvest Maturity and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Inoculant on Dynamics of Fermentation Characteristics and Bacterial and Fungal Community of Triticale Silage

open access: yesAgriculture
(1) Background: Suitable harvest maturity stage selection and microbial inoculation during anaerobic fermentation are effective strategies for improving the quality of triticale (×Triticosecale) silage for ruminant nutrition.

Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) spawning season, size and age at first maturity in Madeira waters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The pelagic chub mackerel, Scomber colias Gmelin, 1789 is one of the most important fishery resources in the Madeira Archipelago. S. colias is caught by a small and coastal purse-seine fleet that traditionally operates around the islands.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The effect of meteorological conditions on the course of development stages and yield of winter wheat in southern Poland [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Water and Land Development
Yield and the course of crop vegetation are the result of the interaction between the level of cultivation technology and the course of meteorological conditions, which are a variable production factor.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
