Bertrand's Paradox and the Maximum Entropy Principle [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophy and Phenomenological Research, 2019
An important suggestion of objective Bayesians is that the maximum entropy principle can replace a principle which is known to get into paradoxical difficulties: the principle of indifference. No one has previously determined whether the maximum entropy principle is better able to solve Bertrand's chord paradox than the principle of indifference.

Identification of serum protein biomarkers for pre‐cancerous lesions associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This work identified serum proteins associated with pancreatic epithelial neoplasms (PanINs) and early‐stage PDAC. Proteomics screens assessed genetically engineered mice with abundant PanINs, KPC mice (Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐KrasG12D/+ Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐Trp53R172H/+ Pdx1‐Cre) before PDAC development and also early‐stage PDAC patients (n = 31), compared to benign ...

Thermodynamic substantiation of the direction of nonequilibrium processes in triadconjugations of machine parts based on the principles of maximum and minimum entropy

open access: yesПроблеми трибології, 2022
The article gives a thermodynamic substantiation of the direction of nonequilibrium processes in tribocouples of machine parts, in tribosystems, based on the principles of maximum and minimum entropy.

Maximum Entropy Production Principle for Stock Returns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In our previous studies we have investigated the structural complexity of time series describing stock returns on New York's and Warsaw's stock exchanges, by employing two estimators of Shannon's entropy rate based on Lempel-Ziv and Context Tree ...

Jaynes' MaxEnt, Steady State Flow Systems and the Maximum Entropy Production Principle

open access: yes, 2009
Jaynes' maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle was recently used to give a conditional, local derivation of the ``maximum entropy production'' (MEP) principle, which states that a flow system with fixed flow(s) or gradient(s) will converge to a steady state ...

Superstatistical distributions from a maximum entropy principle [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2008
We deal with a generalized statistical description of nonequilibrium complex systems based on least biased distributions given some prior information. A maximum entropy principle is introduced that allows for the determination of the distribution of the fluctuating intensive parameter $ $ of a superstatistical system, given certain constraints on the ...

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Maximum Entropy Production Principle and Morphological Selection in Hydrodynamic Systems

open access: yesProceedings, 2017
In recent decades an idea has emerged that the maximum entropy production principle can be used to select from the different regimes of development of nonequilibrium systems. According to this principle the process with maximum entropy production is most

Simultaneous Extrema in the Entropy Production for Steady-State Fluid Flow in Parallel Pipes

open access: yes, 2010
Steady-state flow of an incompressible fluid in parallel pipes can simultaneously satisfy two contradictory extremum principles in the entropy production, depending on the flow conditions.

Differential expression of cancer‐related genes supports prediction of poor response to first‐line treatments in T‐ALL pediatric patients with high minimal residual disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the present work, we have identified a transcriptional signature based on the differential expression of six genes (BCL2&MAST4, HSH2D&LAT2, METRN&PITPNM2) that would facilitate the early detection of T‐cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T‐ALL) patients prone to a poor treatment response and could be implemented at diagnosis, along with other risk ...
