A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Experimental Characterization of Mycelium‐Based Composites Under Multiple Loading Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the mechanical response of mycelium‐based composites under compression, shear, and tension using mechanical testing and imaging methods. The comparison between unpressed and hot‐pressed specimens shows that hot pressing is associated with higher compression and shear stiffnesses.

DMA2022 Dynamic resistance and energy absorption of sandwich beam with based on micro-topology optimization with maximum shear modulus

open access: yes, 2022
Abstract Based on the mechanical characteristics of the core layer, which withstands the shear stress and deformation of a sandwich beam, a topology optimization framework based on the bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization method is proposed to optimize the core layer composed of a periodic base cell with extreme shear stiffness ...

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Impact of seasonal hydrological changes on the small-strain shear modulus of undisturbed and remolded highly expansive soils

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
In the natural environment, the soil structure can be weakened by temperature fluctuations and climatic changes. Nevertheless, the dynamic behavior of expansive soils, especially those with high swelling and pronounced fissure properties, subjected to ...

Effect of confining pressures on the shear modulus of sand treated with enzymatically induced calcite precipitation

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2019
Enzymatically induced calcite precipitation (EICP) is a new breakthrough for liquefaction prevention. This approach uses urease enzyme directly instead of bacteria to hydrolyze urea that precipitated as calcite crystal by the availability of calcium ion.

Experimental studies of scale effects on shear strength, and deformation of rock joints [PDF]

open access: yes, 1980
The effect of scale on shear strength is studied by performing direct shear tests on different sized samples of large joints. A rubber moulding system is used to obtain impressions of the roughness from a variety of natural joint surfaces.

Nonlinear shear modulus of re-entrant hexagonal honeycombs under large deformation

open access: yes, 2016
The nonlinear, in-plane, shear modulus of re-entrant hexagonal honeycombs under large deformation is analytically derived by studying the mechanical behavior of cell structures, which is later verified by numerical simulations.

Experimental and Numerical Modal Analysis of Composite Sandwich Structures Using Surfboards as Model Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents an experimental and numerical modal investigation of composite sandwich structures using surfboards as model systems. By comparing different core materials and reinforcement strategies, the study demonstrates how local stiffeners influence vibrational response and introduce characteristic modal features, highlighting modal ...

Triple Junctions as Dislocation‐Like Defects: The Role of Grain Boundary Crystallography Revealed by Experiment and Atomistic Simulation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Grain boundary triple junctions are an essential ingredient of the microstructure of polycrystalline materials. In this study, a triple junction is observed using atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and characterized. Computer simulations reveal that the junction has a dislocation character that is determined by the joining ...
