Mean squared error vs. frame potential for unsupervised variable selection [PDF]
Forward Selection Component Analysis (FSCA) provides a pragmatic solution to the NP-hard unsupervised variable selection problem, but is not guaranteed to be optimal due to the multi-modal nature of the mean squared error (MSE) selection metric used ...

Geographic variation in walking activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum
This study examined whether there is geographic variation in field populations, focusing on the moving activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Results showed significant differences in moving activity among field populations but no correlation with latitude or meteorological factors.

Estimation of finite population variance using auxiliary information in sample surveys
This paper addresses the problem of estimating the finite population variance using auxiliary information in sample surveys. Motivated by (Singh and Vishwakarma, 2009) some estimators of finite population variance have been suggested along with their ...

A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

Adjusted variance estimators based on minimizing mean squared error for stratified random samples
In the realm of survey data analysis, encountering substantial variance relative to bias is a common occurrence. In this study, we present an innovative strategy to tackle this issue by introducing slightly biased variance estimators.

To explore the impact of the overexpression of the multidrug‐transporter P‐glycoprotein (ABCB1) on membrane fluidity, we compared the transversal gradient of mobility and microviscosity in plasma membranes of drug‐sensitive Chinese hamster ovary cells (AuxB1) and their multidrug‐resistant derivatives (B30) using the fluorescent n‐(9‐anthroyloxy) fatty ...

Estimating misclassification error: a closer look at cross-validation based methods
Background To estimate a classifier’s error in predicting future observations, bootstrap methods have been proposed as reduced-variation alternatives to traditional cross-validation (CV) methods based on sampling without replacement.

Disruption of SETD3‐mediated histidine‐73 methylation by the BWCFF‐associated β‐actin G74S mutation
The β‐actin G74S mutation causes altered interaction of actin with SETD3, reducing histidine‐73 methylation efficiency and forming two distinct actin variants. The variable ratio of these variants across cell types and developmental stages contributes to tissue‐specific phenotypical changes. This imbalance may impair actin dynamics and mechanosensitive

Bootstrapping the Mean Integrated Squared Error
AbstractA smooth bootstrap method is used to find an estimator of the mean integrated squared error in density estimation. This provides a natural bootstrap selector for the bandwidth. Some rates of convergence and limit distributions are presented for this new selector as well as for some modification of it.
