Influence of DMSO Non-Toxic Solvent on the Mechanical and Chemical Properties of a PVDF Thin Film

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Piezoelectric materials such as PVDF and its copolymers have been widely studied in different areas and with promising applications, such as haptic feedback actuators or deformation sensors for aided-mobility scenarios.

The homodimeric ATP-binding cassette transporter LmrA mediates multidrug transport by an alternating two-site (two-cylinder engine) mechanism [PDF]

open access: yesThe EMBO Journal, 2000
The bacterial LmrA protein and the mammalian multidrug resistance P-glycoprotein are closely related ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters that confer multidrug resistance on cells by mediating the extrusion of drugs at the expense of ATP hydrolysis.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Mechanical Characterization and Azithromycin Coating of Melt Electrowritten Polycaprolactone Mesh Implants for Prolapse Repair

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) cases have been rising, affecting women’s quality of life. Severe cases often require surgical mesh implants, which can cause complications like tissue erosion and infection, leading the FDA to ban transvaginal meshes for POP.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Monitoring trabecular bone microdamage using a dynamic acousto-elastic testing method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Dynamic acousto-elastic testing (DAET) is based on the coupling of a lowfrequency (LF) acoustic wave and high-frequency ultrasound (US) pulses (probing wave). It was developed to measure US viscoelastic and dissipative non-linearity in trabecular bone.

Antibiotic-Coated Melt Electrowritten Polycaprolactone Meshes: Fabrication and In Vitro Antibacterial Evaluation

open access: yesMacromol
In recent years, pelvic organ prolapse (POP) cases have been rising, affecting women’s quality of life. Synthetic surgical transvaginal meshes used for POP treatment were withdrawn from the United States market in 2019 due to high risks, including ...

CFD Analysis on the Performance of Twisted Tapes in Horizontal Heat Exchangers for Shower Water Heat Recovery [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Heat and Mass Transfer Research
The thermal energy found in shower hot wastewater, which is usually dumped, can be recovered through heat exchangers and used to pre-heat shower cold-water, contributing to energy sustainability.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Mechanical Controlled Thermal Switch and Hysteresis with Domain Boundary Engineered Phonon Transport [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Heat flow control in phononics has received significant attention recently due to its widespread applications in energy transfer, conversion and utilization. Here, we demonstrate that by applying external stress or strain we can effectively tune the thermal conductivity through changing the density of twin boundaries, which in turn offers the ...
