Mechanism and biological role of Dnmt2 in Nucleic Acid Methylation

open access: yesRNA Biology, 2016
A group of homologous nucleic acid modification enzymes called Dnmt2, Trdmt1, Pmt1, DnmA, and Ehmet in different model organisms catalyze the transfer of a methyl group from the cofactor S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM) to the carbon-5 of cytosine residues ...

Surfaceome: a new era in the discovery of immune evasion mechanisms of circulating tumor cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the era of immunotherapies, many patients either do not respond or eventually develop resistance. We propose to pave the way for proteomic analysis of surface‐expressed proteins called surfaceome, of circulating tumor cells. This approach seeks to identify immune evasion mechanisms and discover potential therapeutic targets. Circulating tumor cells (

Energy flow in biological system: Bioenergy transduction of V1-ATPase molecular rotary motor from E. hirae [PDF]

open access: yesProgress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology 130, Part A, 33-38 (2017), 2017
We classify research fields in biology into those on flows of materials, energy, and information. As a representative energy transducing machinery in biology, our research target, V1-ATPase from a bacterium Enterococcus hirae, a typical molecular rotary motor is introduced.

The Potential of Systems Biology to Discover Antibacterial Mechanisms of Plant Phenolics

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
Drug resistance of bacterial pathogens is a growing problem that can be addressed through the discovery of compounds with novel mechanisms of antibacterial activity. Natural products, including plant phenolic compounds, are one source of diverse chemical

Clinical applications of next‐generation sequencing‐based ctDNA analyses in breast cancer: defining treatment targets and dynamic changes during disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) offers a possibility for different applications in early and late stage breast cancer management. In early breast cancer tumor informed approaches are increasingly used for detecting molecular residual disease (MRD) and early recurrence. In advanced stage, ctDNA provides a possibility for monitoring disease progression and

Genetic deletion of zinc transporter ZnT3 induces progressive cognitive deficits in mice by impairing dendritic spine plasticity and glucose metabolism

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience
Zinc transporter 3 (ZnT3) is abundantly expressed in the brain, residing in synaptic vesicles, where it plays important roles in controlling the luminal zinc levels.

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Hydrodynamic Singularities [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Parisi, S. C. Mueller, and W. Zimmermann (eds.), A Perspective Look at Nonlinear Media in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Springer, Berlin,1998), 2001
We give a brief overview of the physical significance of singularities in fluid mechanics.

Radical-free biology of oxidative stress.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physiology - Cell Physiology, 2008
Free radical-induced macromolecular damage has been studied extensively as a mechanism of oxidative stress, but large-scale intervention trials with free radical scavenging antioxidant supplements show little benefit in humans.

Circulating tumor cells: advancing personalized therapy in small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer that spreads rapidly to secondary sites such as the brain and liver. Cancer cells circulating in the blood, “circulating tumor cells” (CTCs), have demonstrated prognostic value in SCLC, and evaluating biomarkers on CTCs could guide treatment decisions such as for PARP inhibitors ...
