ABC transporters in megakaryopoiesis and platelet activity

Thrombosis Research, 2017
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) is a family of transporters that facilitates the translocation of substrates across cell membrane using its ATPase subunit. These transporters have key roles in multidrug resistance, lipid homeostasis, antigen processing, immunity, cell proliferation and hematopoiesis.

Dysplastic Megakaryopoiesis with Thrombocytopenia and Chromosomal Aberration

American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1992
A case of isolated thrombocytopenia with decreased platelet production and abnormal megakaryopoiesis is described. In the bone marrow, a chromosomally aberrant clone, 45,XX,-11,-18,+der (11;18)(11q13;18p11), was found. These findings indicate a myelodysplastic nature of the abnormal thrombocytopoiesis.

[New aspects of megakaryopoiesis].

Wiener klinische Wochenschrift, 1984
Like erythro- and granulopoiesis megakaryocytopoiesis (MK poiesis) is controlled by specific feed-back mechanisms. Platelet production has been found to be regulated predominantly by the number or mass of circulating platelets. Our present understanding of MK poiesis is based on data from 3 major experimental areas, which are individually discussed in ...

Megakaryopoiesis and Platelet Biogenesis

2016
Blood platelets are 2–3 um anucleate fragments that are formed from the megakaryocyte cytoplasm and have a distinctive discoid shape. To generate and release platelets, megakaryocytes undergo endomitosis to become polyploid and follow a maturation program that results in the transformation of the bulk of their cytoplasm into multiple long processes ...

Thrombopoietin: Biological Effects Beyond Megakaryopoiesis

1997
Since the cloning of thrombopoietin (TPO) in 1994 multiple studies have appeared that establish its critical role in megakaryocyte and platelet production [reviewed in 1]. However, several observations suggest that the haematopoietic effects of the hormone might be greater than initially anticipated. For example, TPO was initially cloned by many groups

[Proliferation and differentiation in megakaryopoiesis].

Verhandlungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Pathologie, 1991
Megakaryocytic progenitor cells only complete a limited number of mitotic events; early in megakaryopoiesis, these cells loose their capacity for cell division and acquire the ability for endoreduplication--a phenomenon that is unique to the megakaryocytic lineage.
