The Melanocortin-3 Receptor

2000
This chapter deals with perhaps the least understood receptor for the melanocortin peptides, that is the melanocortin-3 receptor (MC3-R). Although naturally occurring and genetically engineered mutations have provided us with insight into the function of the other known melanocortin receptors, little is known about the physiologic role of the MC3-R ...

Melanocortin 3 receptor (MC3R) gene variants in extremely obese women

International Journal of Obesity, 2000
Following several reports of linkage of obesity related phenotypes to human chromosome 20q we sought to determine whether variations of the melanocortin 3 receptor (MC3R) gene are associated with obesity. We screened the MC3R gene coding region and approximately 2 kb of 5' and 3' flanking sequences for DNA variants in unrelated extremely obese women and

Activation and Endocytic Internalization of Melanocortin 3 Receptor in Neuronal Cells

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2007
Abstract: Melanocortins play a central role in autonomic modulation of metabolism by acting through a family of highly homologous G protein–coupled receptors. Studies with gene knockout mice have implicated neural melanocortin receptors, MC3R and MC4R, in the etiology of obesity, insulin resistance, and salt‐sensitive hypertension.

Postnatal Expression of Melanocortin-3 Receptor in Rat Diencephalon and Mesencephalon

Neuropharmacology, 1997
In situ hybridization was applied to examine the postnatal expression of melanocortin-3 (MC-3) receptor mRNA in the rat brain. Very weak and limited signals were seen in the hypothalamus on postnatal day 0 (P0) and in the dorsal lateral thalamus on P4. A marked increase was noted in several regions of the diencephalon and mesencephalon on P7.

Pharmacological function of melanocortin-3 receptor in goldfish (Carassius auratus)

General and Comparative Endocrinology
The melanocortin-3 receptor (MC3R) was recognized for its critical role in energy metabolism and inflammatory responses in mammals; however, its functions in fish remain poorly understood. This study characterized the mc3r gene in goldfish, investigating its sequence, tissue distribution, and pharmacological responses.

Effects of Melanocortin Receptor Ligands on Thyrotropin‐Releasing Hormone Release: Evidence for the Differential Roles of Melanocortin 3 and 4 Receptors

Journal of Neuroendocrinology, 2002
AbstractThe hypothalamic melanocortin system is important in the central regulation of food intake and body weight. We have previously demonstrated that intracerebroventricular administration of α‐melanocyte stimulating hormone (α‐MSH), a nonselective MC3 and MC4 receptor agonist, stimulated plasma thyroid‐stimulating hormone, and agouti‐related ...

Peripheral Melanocortin 3 Receptor (MC3R) Regulates Hepatic Autophagy in Obesity

Diabetes, 2018
We have previously reported homozygosity for two MC3R SNPs (C17A+G241A) that partially inactive MC3R increases adiposity in humans and mouse models. However, the precise mechanisms by which hypoactive MC3R alters metabolic homeostasis remain unclear. Given the essential role of hepatic autophagy in cellular mechanisms of obesity, we hypothesized that ...
