Dynamic colour change predicts movement behaviour in a diadromous fish

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Dynamic changes in colour and pattern facilitate key behavioural functions in animals, particularly camouflage for predator avoidance. However, the benefits of colour change depend on the environmental and behavioural contexts. We tested how colour change interacts with movement behaviour in a freshwater fish by filming individuals in an open ...

Stem Cells From Dental Pulp, Periodontal Tissues, and Other Oral Sources: Biological Concepts and Regenerative Potential

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
A graphical abstract recapping the different sources of dental, periodontal, and other oral‐derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and their regenerative mechanisms and potentials. The review's article findings bridge fundamental biological science with translational advances, highlighting the significance of MSCs in craniofacial regenerative ...

Effect of FSH on testicular morphology and spermatogenesis in gonadotrophin-deficient hypogonadal mice lacking androgen receptors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and androgen act to stimulate and maintain spermatogenesis. FSH acts directly on the Sertoli cells to stimulate germ cell number and acts indirectly to increase androgen production by the Leydig cells.

Desacetyl-α-melanocyte stimulating hormone and α-melanocyte stimulating hormone are required to regulate energy balance

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism, 2018
OBJECTIVE: Regulation of energy balance depends on pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides and melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R). Alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is the predicted natural POMC-derived peptide that regulates energy balance. Desacetyl-α-MSH, the precursor for α-MSH, is present in brain and blood.

Innovations in Obesity Treatment: Beyond Adipose Tissue Dysfunction

open access: yesObesity Reviews, EarlyView.
Obesity drives chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cancer development through adipocyte dysfunction. Addressing this multisystemic disorder requires integrated strategies beyond diet and exercise, such as thermogenesis activation via menthol or capsinoids and appetite control through GLP‐1/GIP agonists and neuromodulation to ...

Photoprotective potential of gadusol against ultraviolet B radiation in melanocytes

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Gadusol protects melanocytes from ultraviolet B (UVB)‐induced damage without cytotoxicity. Abstract The increasing incidence of skin cancer, including melanoma, combined with the need for ultraviolet (UV) filters that are safe for human health and marine ecosystems, is driving the search for new photoprotective agents.

Control of energy homeostasis and insulin action by adipocyte hormones: leptin, acylation stimulating protein, and adiponectin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Adipose tissue performs complex metabolic and endocrine functions. This review will focus on the recent literature on the biology and actions of three adipocyte hormones involved in the control of energy homeostasis and insulin action, leptin, acylation ...

Integrative Phosphoproteomic Profiling Reveals Stage‐Specific Signalling and Metabolism in Equine Melanocytic Neoplasm

open access: yesVeterinary and Comparative Oncology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Equine melanocytic neoplasms (EMN) are aggressive tumours characterised by high metastatic potential and limited therapeutic options available. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their progression remain poorly understood. This study therefore presents the integrative phosphoproteomic analysis of EMN tissue, with the aim of ...

Longitudinal evidence of the impact of normal thyroid stimulating hormone variations on cognitive functioning in very old age

open access: yes, 2008
The purpose of this study was to examine longitudinal associations among thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and cognitive performance. Data collected at the first three assessment times, approximately 3 years apart, are reported for the survivors ...

Binding of melanotropic hormones to the melanocortin receptor MC1R on human melanocytes stimulates proliferation and melanogenesis.

open access: yes, 1996
alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) and ACTH increase the proliferation and melanogenesis of cultured human melanocytes. To further analyze how melanotropins produce these biological effects, we investigated the regulation of the ...
