The ESCRT Membrane Scission Machine
The FASEB Journal, 2020The ESCRT complexes I, II, and III and the AAA+ ATPase VPS4, catalyze reverse‐topology scission from the inner face of membrane necks in HIV budding, multivesicular endosome biogenesis, cytokinesis, and other pathways.

Supramolecular Capsules from Bilayer Membrane Scission Driven by Corannulene
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2015AbstractSelf‐assembly of polyaromatic systems has proved to be a powerful technique to construct nanoscale optoelectronic materials. However, attempts to develop self‐assembled nanomaterials guided by pristine polyaromatic molecules have been limited. Here the construction of photoactive nanocapsules through the scission of an aromatic bilayer membrane

Cell Biology The ESCRT protein complexes are essential for cell division, the release of HIV from infected cells via budding, and other cell processes involving the scission of narrow membrane necks from their inner surface. The unusual inside-directed membrane cutting has made it hard to recapitulate this reaction and understand its mechanism ...

When an elastomeric material is held at a fixed state of stretch at a sufficiently high temperature, macromolecular network junctions undergo time-dependent scission and the applied force relaxes with time. The affected molecules recoil and crosslink to form a new network that is stress-free in a new reference configuration.

Cellular Functions and Molecular Mechanisms of the ESCRT Membrane-Scission Machinery
Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 2017The endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) machinery is an assembly of protein subcomplexes (ESCRT I-III) that cooperate with the ATPase VPS4 to mediate scission of membrane necks from the inside. The ESCRT machinery has evolved as a multipurpose toolbox for mediating receptor sorting, membrane remodeling, and membrane scission, with ...

Comparing Multifunctional Viral and Eukaryotic Proteins for Generating Scission Necks in Membranes
ACS NanoAbstractDeterministic formation of membrane scission necks by protein machinery with multiplexed functions is critical in biology. A microbial example is the M2 viroporin, a proton pump from the influenza A virus which is multiplexed with membrane remodeling activity to induce budding and scission in the host membrane during viral maturation.
