Synthesis, Structure, and Thin Film Optical Properties of a Chiral Benzothiazole‐Derived Squaraine
Solution‐processed thin films can be sensitive to the choice of solvent and thermal annealing, which we explore for a chiral benzothiazole squaraine. We observe peculiarly shaped excitonic circular dichroism in uniaxially anisotropic thin films, in which the presumed Davydov bands are spatially distributed exclusively into in‐plane (UDC) and out‐of ...

Reversible Switching of Spiropyran Molecules in Direct Contact With a Bi(111) Single Crystal Surface [PDF]
Photochromic molecular switches immobilized by direct contact with surfaces typically show only weak response to optical excitation, which often is not reversible.

Unusual Swelling Behavior of Hydrogels Modified with Spiropyran as Appendage or Crosslinker
Not so innocent after all—spiropyran crosslinkers in methylenebisacrylamide‐crosslinked poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) hydrogels increase crosslinking density, but also, counterintuitively, increase swelling. Charge complexation, cooperative chemo‐mechanical effects, and aggregation may explain these observations.

Photo-controlled permeation of spiropyran modified gramicidin A ion channel [PDF]
Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2006Biomimetic devices show great potential as being molecular sensors of biological species. Gramicidin A (gA) is a well studied ionophore that can be easily modified at the C-terminus to be incorporated ...

The effect of annulation upon the solvatochromic behaviour of related merocyanines [PDF]
The effect of annulation of the donor and/or the acceptor ring fragments of related merocyanines is discussed with the aid of a theoretical model based on semiempirical calculations performed with the AM1 method.

A series of photo‐responsive polymers are prepared by a facile one‐pot in situ synthesis strategy, where RTP modules and photochromic units are systematically integrated into one polymer system. The triplet‐singlet Förster resonance energy transfer (TS‐FRET) between the donor and acceptor enables the material to exhibit time‐dependent phosphorescence ...

Biomimetic supramolecular hosts in water affect outcomes and behavior of E/Z‐isomerizations. A deeper understanding of such effects can pave the way to understanding photochemical processes in more complex biological environments. The review displays examples of supramolecular hosts affecting the outcomes of E/Z‐isomerizations and subsequently ...

This review summarizes how even minor chemical modifications can be used to shape spiropyran photochromism. We highlight how substituents, strain, and heteroatoms tune absorption, stability, switching efficiency, and overall photochromic behaviour.
