The role of the mesophyll cell wall in leaf transpiration

Planta, 1970
Evidence is presented which suggests that the mesophyll cell walls of cotton leaves may influence observed rates of transpiration. The net diffusive flux of water vapour, from the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf, was compared with the flux of nitrous oxide through a leaf and evidence obtained of an extra resistance in the water-vapour pathway ...

Vacuolar pH in radish cotyledonal mesophyll cells

Planta, 1987
The vacuolar pH in cotyledonal mesophyll cells from radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. sativus) seedlings was determined from vacuoles, isolated from protoplasts through osmotic shock, by means of measurement of vacuole extracts with a pH meter and the "methylamine method", and gave mean pH values of 6.28 and 6.26, respectively.

Tobacco mosaic virus in dividing mesophyll cells of Nicotiana

Virology, 1969
Abstract Cells in differentiating mesophyll of Nicotiana tabacum L. leaves infected with tobacco mosaic virus divide in the presence of large accumulations of the virus. After the nuclear envelope breaks down during mitosis, scattered virus particles and small aggregates of particles occur among the chromosomes and continue to be associated with ...

Cell-wall antigens in mesophyll cells and mesophyll-derived protoplasts of sugar beet: possible implication in protoplast recalcitrance?

Plant Cell Reports, 2003
We have investigated the possible relation between plant cell-wall constituents and the recalcitrance of the cell to regenerate organs and whole plants in vitro. A temporal and spatial expression of several carbohydrate epitopes was observed both within leaf tissue used for protoplast isolation and within new walls reformed by recalcitrant mesophyll ...

Separation of Mesophyll from Non‐Mesophyll Cell Wall Tissue in Indiangrass Leaf Blades

Agronomy Journal, 1991
AbstractA method to isolate large quantities of non‐mesophyll cell wall material for studying factors that limit the susceptibility of these cell wall polysaccharides to microbial degradation was evaluated. Mesophyll cells were separated from non‐mesophyll cells in indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans [L.] Nash) leaf blades by ball milling to separate cells

Guard cells and mesophyll: a delicate metabolic relationship

Trends in Plant Science
Understanding cell type-specific metabolism, especially under unfavorable conditions, is paramount. Recent discoveries by Shi et al. and Auler et al. linked to stomatal closure stimuli, abscisic acid (ABA), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) have pointed to new avenues to be explored to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms linked to starch and malate ...

Differentiation of Alkaloid Cells in Cultures of Macleaya Mesophyll Protoplasts

Planta Medica, 1982
In developing cell clusters derived from mesophyll protoplasts of Macleaya cordata (Willd.) R. Br. and M. microcarpa ( Maxim.) Fedde (Papaveraceae) cytodifferentiation is observed in the form of alkaloid cells and tracheary elements. The differentiation of alkaloid cells can already occur at the early stage of small clusters.

Regulation of cytoplasmic streaming in Vallisneria mesophyll cells

Journal of Cell Science, 1983
ABSTRACT Induction and cessation of the rotational cytoplasmic streaming in Vallisneria mesophyll cells could be controlled by external stimuli. In cells that had been kept in darkness the cytoplasm remained quiescent. However, when the cells were treated in the dark with EGTA solution (10 mM or 20 mM buffered with 10mM-Tris-maleate at ...

Cell wall regeneration and cell division in isolated tobacco mesophyll protoplasts

Planta, 1970
Protoplasts were isolated from palisade tissue of tobacco leaves by treatment with pectinase and cellulase under aseptic conditions, and were cultured in a synthetic liquid medium. Calcofluor, a fluorescent brightener, was found to be an excellent stain for plant cell walls and was used to demonstrate regeneration of cell walls in these protoplasts ...

Death of mitochondria during programmed cell death of leaf mesophyll cells

Cell Biology International, 2005
The role of plant mitochondria in the programmed cell death (PCD) is widely discussed. However, spectrum and sequence of mitochondrial structural changes during different types of PCD in leaves are poorly described. Pea, cucumber and rye plants were grown under controlled growing conditions.
