Prolonged blockade of NMDA or mGluR5 glutamate receptors reduces nigrostriatal degeneration while inducing selective metabolic changes in the basal ganglia circuitry in a rodent model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2006
We compared the neuroprotective and metabolic effects of chronic treatment with ionotropic or metabotropic glutamate receptor antagonists, in rats bearing a unilateral nigrostriatal lesion induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). The ionotropic, N-methyl-d-

Structures of metabotropic GABAB receptor [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2020
AbstractGABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) stimulation of the metabotropic GABABreceptor results in prolonged inhibition of neurotransmission that is central to brain physiology. GABABbelongs to the Family C of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which operate as dimers to relay synaptic neurotransmitter signals into a cellular response through the binding ...

Deciphering the Role of Cancer Stem Cells in Breast Cancer Brain Colonization Using a Novel Patient‐Derived Model

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that stem‐like cells isolated from breast cancer brain metastases drive the spread and growth of tumors in the brain. Among them, a highly adhesive subgroup initiates metastasis and resists many drugs. By closely reflecting patient tumors, these models help identify new targets and improve the development of effective treatments ...

The Role of Glutamate Receptors in Epilepsy

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2023
Glutamate is an essential excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, playing an indispensable role in neuronal development and memory formation. The dysregulation of glutamate receptors and the glutamatergic system is involved in numerous

Dependence receptor involvement in subtilisin-induced long-term depression and in long-term potentiation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The serine protease subtilisin induces a form of long-term depression (LTD) which is accompanied by a reduced expression of the axo-dendritic guidance molecule Unco-ordinated-5C (Unc-5C).

Functional Analysis of Ligand‐Gated Chloride Channels in a Cnidarian Sheds Light on the Evolution of Inhibitory Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover a large variety of putative inhibitory ligand‐gated ion channels (LGICs) in the phylum Cnidaria, the sister group to all bilaterian animals. Phylogenetic analysis suggests a complex evolutionary history of inhibitory LGICs with diverse neurotransmitter ligands.

Orthogonal Activation of Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor Using Coordination Chemogenetics

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemistry, 2022
Cell-surface receptors play a pivotal role as transducers of extracellular input. Although different cell types express the same receptor, the physiological roles of the receptor are highly dependent on cell type.

Emotional Impairment and Persistent Upregulation of mGlu5 Receptor following Morphine Abstinence: Implications of an mGlu5-MOPr Interaction. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
BACKGROUND: A difficult problem in treating opioid addicts is the maintenance of a drug-free state because of the negative emotional symptoms associated with withdrawal, which may trigger relapse.

Mild Focal Cooling Decouples Dendrites to Reconfigure Cortical Output

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mild cooling of the cortical surface selectively modulates apical dendritic excitability, plasticity, and somato‐dendritic coupling, while uncoupling these effects from basal dendrites, and reshapes apical‐driven responses in barrel cortex during whisker touch.

Sex-dependence of synaptic depression induced by activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors in rat hippocampus

open access: yesBrain and Neuroscience Advances
The modulation of synaptic efficacy by group I metabotropic glutamate receptors is dysregulated in several neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders impacting cognitive function.
