Strengthening Metallic Structures using Externally-Bonded FRP: An Overview of UK Practice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Strengthening metallic structures using externally-bonded fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) is a young and rapidly developing technique. It allows extension of the lives of structures that are deficient due to corrosion, fatigue, damage, or where a change

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Multicolor Histochemical Staining for Identification of Mineralized and Non-Mineralized Musculoskeletal Tissue: Immunohistochemical and Radiological Validation in Decalcified Bone Samples

open access: yesBioengineering, 2022
Histochemical staining of paraffin-embedded decalcified bone samples is commonly used in preclinical research of musculoskeletal diseases, enabling the visualization of multiple tissue components by the application of chromogens.

Designing for tapers and defects in FRP-strengthened metallic structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Adhesively bonded FRP strengthening for metallic structures relies critically on the adhesive joint between the FRP and the metal. Current best-practice in design allows the distribution of shear and peel stress along the adhesive connection to be ...

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Metal–Metal Bonding

open access: yes, 2013
This chapter deals with the electronic structure of metal-metal bonds in molecular systems, a diverse topic that now spans almost the entire periodic table. The field is most often associated with strong multiple bonds such as the iconic quadruple bond in [Re2Cl8]2-, and the recently discovered ultra-short Cr-Cr quintuple bonds provide a remarkable ...

Light-matter interactions on nano-structured metallic film [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This thesis describes a study into the optical properties of nano-structured metallic films. Structures are produced by electrochemically depositing metal through a self-assembled template of polymer micro-spheres.
