The Alchemist’s Approach to Metal Poisoning: Transforming the Metal Burden

open access: yesToxics, 2014
Metal poisoning is a global problem with humans being exposed to a wide range of metals in varying doses and varying time frames. Traditionally, treatment involves removal of the toxic source or chelation therapy. An intermediate approach is needed. This

Two metallothionein gene family members in buckwheat: Expression analysis in flooding stress using Real Time RT-PCR technology [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Biological Sciences, 2008
Metallothioneins (MTs) are an extensive and diverse family of small cysteine-rich proteins with metal-binding ability that are involved in metal homeostasis and detoxification. Two cDNA clones of the MT3 type, differing in 3’ UTRs, were isolated from the

Trace Element Analysis in Human Neuroblastoma Cell Spheroids Supplemented With ZnCl2 by Micro‐XRF

open access: yesX-Ray Spectrometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Neuroblastoma, the most common extracranial solid tumor of childhood, is responsible for ~10% of pediatric cancer deaths and has high potential for metastasis. Metals are extremely important in biological processes, and changes in their levels have been correlated with the development of cancerous growth.

The Analysis, Identification, and Formulation of Metallothionein Extract Available in Roots, Stems, Leaves , Flowers , and Grains of Rice, Corns, Beans , and Soybeans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
–Vegetable materials are easily found around us but are frequently considered useless. The Metallothionein content in vegetable materials such in roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruit of rice, corns, beans, and soybeans has not been investigated ...

Fel d 1‐Expressing Plant‐Derived Bioparticle: A Novel Treatment for Cat Allergy

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study investigates the allergenicity and immunogenicity profile of a novel plant‐derived Fel d 1 bioparticle (eBP). Fel d 1 eBP promotes immune tolerance by redirecting allergic Th2 responses toward Th1 and IL‐10–producing regulatory pathways, including Bregs.

Detection of Metallothionein in Javanese Medaka (Oryzias javanicus), Using a scFv-Immobilized Protein Chip

open access: yesSensors, 2018
Environmental pollution by various industrial chemicals and biological agents poses serious risks to human health. Especially, marine contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has become a global concern in recent years.

Effects of Waterborne Cadmium Exposure on Its Internal Distribution in Meretrix meretrix and Detoxification by Metallothionein and Antioxidant Enzymes

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Cadmium (Cd), one of the most toxic metals found in inshore sediments of China, is a persistent environmental contaminant capable of exerting irreversible toxic effects on aquatic organisms and their associated ecosystems.

Accumulation of Heavy Metals in Franciscanas from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Marine mammals accumulate heavy metals in their tissues at different concentrations according to trophic levels and environmental conditions. The franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei) is a small coastal species inhabiting the marine and estuarine areas of

A Meta‐Analysis of the Effects of Acute Sleep Deprivation on the Cortical Transcriptome in Rodent Models

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
How does sleep deprivation affect the brain? We performed a meta‐analysis of publicly available transcriptional profiling datasets characterising the effects of sleep deprivation on cortical gene expression (n = 293 mice, 16,290 genes) and validated our results in an independent sample (n = 222 mice).

Metallothionein: An overview [PDF]

open access: yesWorld Journal of Gastroenterology, 2007
Metallothioneins (MTs) were discovered in 1957 by Margoshes and Vallee and identified as low-molecular weight and sulphydryl rich proteins. It is not surprising that most mammalian tissues contain age related basal levels of MTs since they are involved in metalloregulatory processes that include cell growth and multiplication.
