Nucleosomes in metaphase chromosomes [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 1976
Previous studies of the structure of metaphase chromosomes have relied heavily on electron micrography and have revealed the existence of a 10-nm unit fiber that is thought to generate the native 23-30-nm fiber by higher order folding. The structural relationship of these metaphase fibers to the interphase fiber remains obscure.

Metaphase association of mammalian chromosomes

open access: yesGenome, 1987
The association behavior of chromosomes bearing nucleolar organizer region (NOR) and (or) C-heterochromatin in metaphase plates was analyzed. Different species with an informative chromosomal localization of NOR and C-heterochromatin were evaluated. Several examples indicate that the well-known metaphase association is not due to NORs or NOR activity ...

Metaphase-arrested spindles remain stable without auxin treatment.

open access: yes, 2022
Shows a metaphase-arrested oocyte expressing mCherry::tubulin (left) and degron::GFP::ZYG-9 (right), dissected into a control Meiosis medium solution. Corresponds to Fig 2A. No major changes in spindle length or shape occur. Note that the spindle rotates

Kinetochore alignment within the metaphase plate is regulated by centromere stiffness and microtubule depolymerases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
During mitosis in most eukaryotic cells, chromosomes align and form a metaphase plate halfway between the spindle poles, about which they exhibit oscillatory movement. These movements are accompanied by changes in the distance between sister kinetochores,

Detection of complete and partial chromosome gains and losses by comparative genomic in situ hybridization [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Comparative genomic in situ hybridization (CGH) provides a new possibility for searching genomes for imbalanced genetic material. Labeled genomic test DNA, prepared from clinical or tumor specimens, is mixed with differently labeled control DNA prepared ...

Rapid metaphase and interphase detection of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes by chromosomal suppression in situ hybridization [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
Chromosomal in situ suppression (CISS)-hybridization of biotinylated phage DNA-library inserts from sorted human chromosomes was used to decorate chromosomes 1 and 7 specifically from pter to qter and to detect structural aberrations of these chromosomes

Chromosome condensation in mitosis and meiosis of rye (Secale cereale L.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Structural investigation and morphometry of meiotic chromosomes by scanning electron microscopy (in comparison to light microscopy) of all stages of condensation of meiosis I + II show remarkable differences during chromosome condensation in mitosis and ...

Chromosome Centromeres: Structural and Analytical Investigations with High Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy in Combination with Focused Ion Beam Milling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Whole mount mitotic metaphase chromosomes of different plants and animals were investigated with high resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) to study the ultrastructural organization of centromeres, including metacentric ...

CDC25B is required for the metaphase I-metaphase II transition in mouse oocytes

open access: yesJournal of Cell Science, 2022
ABSTRACT Mammalian oocytes are arrested at meiotic prophase I. The dual-specificity phosphatase CDC25B is essential for cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) activation that drives resumption of meiosis. CDC25B reverses the inhibitory effect of the protein kinases WEE1 and MYT1 on CDK1 activation.

Cell Division Cycle 5-Like Regulates Metaphase-to-Anaphase Transition in Meiotic Oocyte

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
The quality of oocytes is a vital factor for embryo development. Meiotic progression through metaphase I usually takes a relatively long time to ensure correct chromosome separation, a process that is critical for determining oocyte quality.
