Embryonic development of the Mediterranean starfish Hacelia attenuata

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Starfish play essential ecological roles as predators and ecosystem regulators; however, detailed developmental descriptions exist for only a handful of species, none of which are from the Mediterranean Sea. Results In this study, we provide the first full account of the development of the Mediterranean starfish Hacelia attenuata ...

Impact of donor mare and stallion identity on the likelihood of pregnancy after transfer of in vitro produced embryos

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The success of in vitro embryo production (IVEP) is influenced by donor mare and stallion. Objectives To determine whether donor mare and stallion influence the pregnancy rate after transfer of in vitro produced (IVP) blastocysts and to identify factors influencing the likelihood of obtaining one or more pregnancies from a single ...

Caregiver perspectives on patient-focused drug development for Phelan-McDermid syndrome

open access: yesOrphanet Journal of Rare Diseases
Background Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by SHANK3 haploinsufficiency with clinical manifestations that can be devastating and profoundly affect quality of life.

B microchromosomes in the family Curimatidae (Characiformes): mitotic and meiotic behavior

open access: yesComparative Cytogenetics, 2011
In the present work, six curimatid species were analyzed: Cyphocharax voga (Hensel, 1870), C. spilotus (Vari, 1987), C. saladensis (Meinken, 1933), C. modestus (Fernández-Yépez, 1948), Steindachnerina biornata (Braga & Azpelicueta, 1987)

Rabl's model of the interphase chromosome arrangement tested in Chinise hamster cells by premature chromosome condensation and laser-UV-microbeam experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
In 1885 Carl Rabl published his theory on the internal structure of the interphase nucleus. We have tested two predictions of this theory in fibroblasts grown in vitro from a female Chinese hamster, namely (1) the Rabl-orientation of interphase ...

Clinical and Cytogenomic Characterization of Three Patients With Distal 1q43q44 Deletion: Twin Sisters With a de novo Deletion and a Patient With der(1)t(1;21)(q43;q22.3)mat

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
Distal 1q43q44 deletions lead to a consistent neurodevelopmental phenotype characterized by microcephaly, corpus callosum abnormalities, and developmental delay. Despite differences in genomic architecture, overlapping deletions affecting dosage‐sensitive genes such as AKT3, HNRNPU, and ZBTB18 define the core phenotype.

Centromere mechanical maturation during mammalian cell mitosis

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
During mitosis, tension at the centromere occurs from the spindle but the role of centromere mechanics in controlling metaphase tension is poorly understood.

How eggs arrest at metaphase II: MPF stabilisation plus APC/C inhibition equals Cytostatic Factor

open access: yesCell Division, 2007
Oocytes from higher chordates, including man and nearly all mammals, arrest at metaphase of the second meiotic division before fertilization. This arrest is due to an activity that has been termed 'Cytostatic Factor'.

Length-dependent anisotropic scaling of spindle shape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Spindle length varies dramatically across species and during early development to segregate chromosomes optimally. Both intrinsic factors, such as regulatory molecules, and extrinsic factors, such as cytoplasmic volume, determine spindle length scaling ...
