Known and Unknown Biases: A Framework for Contextualising and Identifying Bias in Animal Behaviour Research

open access: yesEthology, Volume 131, Issue 12, Page 269-276, December 2025.
As scientists, we are prone to biases. These biases can influence our ideas, how we conduct our research and how we interpret our findings. Individual researchers can take active steps to locate and mitigate bias in their own work. We propose a matrix of classifying biases which will help researchers contextualise biases.

On “Confirmatory” Methodological Research in Statistics and Related Fields

open access: yesStatistics in Medicine, Volume 44, Issue 25-27, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Empirical substantive research, such as in the life or social sciences, is commonly categorized into the two modes exploratory and confirmatory, both of which are essential to scientific progress. The former is also referred to as hypothesis‐generating or data‐contingent research, while the latter is also called hypothesis‐testing research. In

Language barriers in conservation science citation networks

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 5, October 2025.
Abstract Using relevant scientific evidence is crucial to effectively conserve species and ecosystems worldwide. Currently, evidence that is available only in non‐English languages is severely underutilized. We examined many underutilized non‐English languages in the conservation evidence literature and factors that facilitate the use of non‐English ...

How Transparent and Reproducible Are Studies That Use Animal Models of Opioid Addiction?

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 30, Issue 4, April 2025.
This study assessed transparency, reproducibility and bias minimization practices in animal models of opioid addiction research from 2019 to 2023. Key indices included analysis script sharing, preregistration, masking and randomization, among others. Our findings reveal substantial room for improvement to enhance transparency, reproducibility and the ...
