Archaea are widespread in the environment and play fundamental roles in diverse ecosystems; however, characterization of their unique biology requires advanced tools. This is particularly challenging when characterizing gene function.

Characterization of the Methanococcus jannaschii RNase P holoenzyme.
The RNase P RNAs from Methanococcus and Archaeoglobus lack secondary structural features essential for the recognition of pre-tRNA. In the absence of protein, these RNase P RNAs lack catalytic activity.

Characterization of guanine and hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferases in Methanococcus voltae
Phosphoribosyltransferase (PRTase) and nucleoside phosphorylase (NPase) activities were detected by radiometric methods in extracts of Methanococcus voltae. Guanine PRTase activity was present at 2.7 nmol min(-1) mg of protein(-1) and had an apparent Km for guanine of 0.2 mM and a pH optimum of 9. The activity was inhibited 50% by 0.3 mM GMP.

Methanococcus frisius sp.nov., a new methylotrophic marine methanogen
A Gram-negative, nonmotile, coccoid methanogenic bacterium of 0.9–1.6 μm in diameter was isolated from shoal mud of the southern North Sea (West Germany). The isolate grew on H2 + CO2, methanol, and methylamines.

Rare Biosphere Archaea Assimilate Acetate in Precambrian Terrestrial Subsurface at 2.2 km Depth
The deep biosphere contains a large portion of the total microbial communities on Earth, but little is known about the carbon sources that support deep life.

Heat shock response of the archaebacterium Methanococcus voltae
The general properties of the heat shock response of the archaebacterium Methanococcus voltae were characterized. The induction of 11 heat shock proteins, with apparent molecular weights ranging from 18,000 to 90,000, occurred optimally at 40 to 50 degrees C. Some of the heat shock proteins were preferentially enriched in either the soluble (cytoplasm)

In Methanococcus maripaludis S2, the swimming organelle, the archaellum, is composed of three archaellins, FlaB1S2, FlaB2S2 and FlaB3S2. All three are modified with an N-linked tetrasaccharide at multiple sites.
