The Italian physicist Volta must be credited for observation that the bubbles arising at the surface of Lago Maggiore were inflammable (1776). Thirty years later, this combustible air was identified as methane (CH4), whose microbial origin was established only in 1868.

Aerobic Methylotrophic Bacteria as Phytosymbionts
Microbiology, 2001This paper deals with the physiological, biochemical, and molecular genetic aspects of the interaction of aerobic methylotrophic bacteria with plants by means of phytohormones (such as cytokinins and auxins) and other physiologically active substances (vitamins, exopolysaccharides, bioprotectants).

Three groups of microbes are considered here: the methane utilizers, the methanol utilizers, and the carbon monoxide utilizers. The methane utilizers (methanotrophs) appear to be composed of distinctive groups of bacteria with properties that set them apart from the majority of other microbes.

Physiology and Biochemistry of Methylotrophic Bacteria
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 1987The importance of a thorough understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of a microorganism before proceeding to genetic studies or industrial exploitation cannot be over-emphasised. In the case of the methylotrophic bacteria, we have a considerable body of basic biochemical information for a range of species including representatives of ...

Genetics of Methylotrophic Yeasts
1987Biochemical and physiological investigations of methylotrophic yeasts have produced a number of intriguing observations with regard to the ability of these yeasts to grow on methanol [1, 2]. At least two observations are of particular interest to geneticists and molecular biologists.
